I'm thinking of making the move to NZ, I would want to be somewhere that has the best music scene, I would want to start a band, play gigs, promote shows ect while I am here, somewhere told me Auckland is the best place for this?

hi! welcome to the forums!!
yup, auckland has the 'best' music scene in NZ...there are studios and bands and good music schools too!! you can easily find band members and form a band...one of them is on hobson street...forgot the name..but the music shop on hobson street...they teach music and have good bands jamming together!!

all the best!! :nice1

I would say auckland or wellington probably 'most likely'

I'm inclined to say Dunedin, big contingent of musos there considering population. Overall though probably Auckland, but from what I know they have less of a proper 'scene' as in 'community'.

It has to be auckland. The music scene down here is nothing like the uk.
No real big bands and only a few nationally recognised bands. Great place if you like 80's style rock (i'd never heard so much Def Leopard till i got here)
Kiwi kids do get stuck in though and are not frightened to give stuff a go.

And if you head for Devonport in Auckland you could be rubbing shoulders with one of NZ's most famous musicians - Tim Finn. Music seems to take a higher priority at schools here than in the UK and the local grammar has produced a few good bands that tour nationally and internationally.

For it's size, Wellington has a very good music scene. Plenty of venues, and bands.

Some people judge the music scene by how many 'international' bands play there...and to be honest in the whole of New Zealand it aint many, and those that do come tend to only go to Auckland (there are exceptions)....

....however if this allows you to see and hear local bands who IMHO are excellent and just a bit different

If you haven't check out; Nathan King, Goodshirt, Ladyhawke, Midnight Youth, Fat Freddy's Drop, The Mint Chicks, Smashproof, The Black Seeds

If you want to go back a few years there's still everything the Finn brothers did (and still do - When Worlds Collide is Brilliant) and Dave Dobbyn.

Personally, I feel get a lot more pleasure from the music scene in Wellington then ever I did living near London

that's good to hear! we were just talking about this the other day... we tend to go to quite a few concerts in london and i highly doubt we'll get to see most of those bands in NZ. so it's comforting to know the local scene is doing well!

Thing is if you want to see international bands you can always hop on Jetstar to Jaffaland or over the Ditch. Some of the prices are as cheap as a rail fare to London (actually scratch that - they're cheaper! $49!!!)

Just found out that the 2010 Big Day Out (would love to see both Muse and Kasabian live, as well as some of the others) is on in the middle of my mum's visit in January! Would anyone like to babysit a 63 year old for a day? We'll pay!

LMAO! You are soooo right!

You just have to be a bit more adventurous, search a bit harder to find the good stuff, there is some out there, I just wish they'd play it on the radio sometimes rather than endlessly repeating ACDC, Bon Jovi, and anyone else with big hair.
