Hi All
Trying to work out...
if I leave UK last week of Oct will that give me enough time to job hunt for Primary jobs before end of term 17 Dec. Or is that pushing it?
Might be able to leave week before or week before that. Maybe.

Hi there tea drinker. :)
For some reason I thought you were already here.
Very glad to hear you're making your way over though. :nice1
I would have thought that would give you enough time. However, would it be worth ringing around some of the primary schools in the area where you're headed beforehand to get some interviews lined up??
I wish you the very best of luck with your job search. ;)

Thanks
I'm planning on being ready to go when I get there (if you see what I mean :))
flexible where I go but suggestions from others say Auckland is most likely place to get a job
have professional registration
will be researching schools and job adverts for Feb '10 before I come
CVs at the ready
might even be able to email schools re adverts letting them know of arrival date
My ever so slight panic (!) was if I arrive last week of Oct would the remaining weeks upto C'mas be enough time to get a job offer ( then medicals then work permit) before start of new year in Jan/Feb
I can see a flight available last week of Oct at a good price ;) but need to make a decision before it disappears.
PS I'm there in spirit :D

tea drinker- if you've got PR and have flight tickets you could start applying now and make sure the first line of your covering letter reads something like: I am a NZ Permanant Resident arriving in New Zealand on the blah of October.
Remember next semester all the teaching students qualifying end of this year will be applying in earnest, although I think if you're heading to Auckland you should be fine, but all the same- there's nothing to be lost in starting to apply now, especially if you get a couple of knock backs and can enquire why or some interview experience.
Good luck- I remember the feeling the day we booked tickets; took us a couple of hours to pluck up the courage to hit the commit button!!

Are you looking to work in term 4 or just for the start of 2010?
Not sure if you're keen on working with new entrants (5 year olds), but in term 3 and 4 many schools open up new classes for new entrants (as children can start school as soon as they turn 5).
Otherwise, for the new year some schools may have already started advertising if they've got maternity leave positions. Usually end September is when schools start advertising for the new year (although, this ranges and some are also only start in November). Kind of a hard thing to say for sure.
Either way, you'll be able to view postings on the Gazette and still apply... just tell them that you're coming over in Oct. Many will probably be happy to do a phone interview.

If you get in touch with the teaching agencies, they will arrange a work permit pretty quickly I think, or so they told me, so if they get you a job, they do all the rest then you apply for PR once in the job.

Thanks for the advice (again :)) Carey.
Master plan is to apply for PR when have grubby mitts on work permit ;)
Just had a little middle of the night panic that arriving for last 7 weeks of NZ summer term might not be enough.
