Whilst I know from recent threads that the job situation in NZ isn't as great as it could be, Hubby and I are hoping to head out to NZ for the beginning of November (commitments mean that we can't leave before mid-October at the absolute earliest, and it is more likely that we will be flying on or around 1st Nov).

In your experience, how long would employers be willing to wait for someone to be able to start? i.e. if we apply for jobs being advertised now, are they going to say "we want someone to start in a month..."?

And how likely are employers to be able to do interviews over the phone / Skype?

i'd start applying now. in the current climate, your strike rate will be lower than usual and it will give you time to seek/chase for feedback to make sure you are well armed when time becomes more critical.

You may want to say which industries you are interested in, as the answer is likely to be very specific.

For example, the health care sector are no doubt still waiting for up to 12 months for the right candidates.

I'm specifically IT Sales / Account Management (though I'm also looking at a couple of non-sales related civil sevice jobs which are in the same field); my husband is primarily looking at civil service.

Cheers - I'll start working on those application forms!

I've been open abou ty timescales with companies, ie 6-9 months. And that was considered a big plus by the main one I'd talked to, in that I was being honest, serious, not panicking as with many uk applicants that had been made redundant and it means that in this economic cycle they can plan long term for a post for me.

Will depend on if you've got unique skills and the specific industry of course.

Yes, what Ian said.

I am an RN and I was worried about applying for jobs too soon into the process but was told by my recruiter that "they are used to waiting for people" in the health care sector. It will have been 4 months from my job interview to when I start my job.

Good luck!

when my OH was interviewed they wanted him to start in 6 weeks but we negotiated that to 11 weeks and they are happy with that.

I guess if they have found the right candidate they will be willing to wait a reasonable amount of time.
