Something told me to make sure we had a plan B !!!!!!!!
Have heard today that there's a slight hitch with the sale of our house (thankfully nothing serious) but it means that we won't complete in time to make our 21st May departure :(
We are in the fortunate position of not having any future employer breathing down our necks demanding that we arrive in the country by a certain date, or any other reason why we MUST be in NZ by a stated deadline. It's just our impatience that's gnawing away at us. This move has been a long time coming and I guess in the grand scale of things, an extra 8 weeks won't make a huge difference.
We now have tickets booked for 16th July. We have to wait for Mark to do another 'work rotation' in Egypt before we can leave - hence the later departure date.
Whilst driving Mark to the station this morning we were almost convincing ourselves that our delayed departure 'could' have a few benefits. There's a few social events and birthdays that we now won't miss out on, for one reason or another there's a chance of the delay resulting in a bit more cash in our pockets too. Like I've already mentioned, the only real down side to this scenario is the fact that we're impatient .... and I mean REALLY impatient.
However, we've always had a strict rule in this household ........ change the things you can't accept and accept the things you can't change. I guess this needs to be applied to this situation :(
So .... guess that means we're yet more victims of the dreadful property selling/buying system in this country. The thing that grates on us more than an 8 week delay is the fact that we have no control over the situation. Yeah we accept it - but that doesn't mean to say it doesn't annoy the living daylights out of us.
Just as abit of an afterthought though. Had we been leaving in 4 weeks time it would have been full on mad running around right up until we boarded the flight. This way we'll have those last few weeks to chill out and enjoy our time with family & friends - not such a bad thing I guess.
Do I sound convincing :no :no :no :no :no :no :no

Diny - yes you do sound convincing, in the wider sense that you are wisely trying to enjoy and plot the positives in your new departure date. :clap
I understand re. the house sale uncertainty... but as you aware, uncertainty itself is possibly the very biggest energy-and-spirit sapper in any process like the NZ project. So as you seem to be coming strongly to grips with that, it sounds like you are in good shape indeed! :nice1
Enjoy your extra time in the UK.
Cheers,
Matt.

Oh Diny that is pants!!!! :(
I'm so sorry to hear that you'll have to wait another 8 weeks before you can go. Like you say though, it will give you more time to sort everything out without quite so much of a rush - but I know you really wouldn't have minded that rush would you? :no
I've said it before and I'll say it again - I like your style! My new motto is going to be 'change the things you can't accept and accept the things you can't change'. :nice1
This house selling lark is a total pain in the neck - there must be a better way (unfortunately, I just don't know what it is)!
I know you'll keep your chin well and truly up, but I just wanted you to know that us KiwiDollies are thinking of you and yours and following your progress with our collective fingers crossed.
All the very best to you xx

So sorry to hear your news - however, in the grand scheme of life a few weeks isn't going to make much difference - however, I bet there still be a mad rush in the end.
Our buyers still haven't signed the contract and we're now beginning to get twitchy. I've got a job to go to and will need to be off late may / early june - I'd hate to think we all weren't going together.
Fingers crossed anyway

Is it a problem with a mortgage redemption penalty Diny? I've just had the same thing from my buyers, with completion delayed by 6 weeks. Can you still nail down the exchange of contracts so you've got some peace of mind? :(
Diny

Is it a problem with a mortgage redemption penalty
No - nothing like that. The woman buying our house is getting a divorce. Once she gets the financial settlement from her ex then she will complete the sale. Her ex lead her/us to believe that he had 'started the ball rolling' several weeks ago but it's transpired that that's not quite true. Yes he has put the wheels in motion but NOT several weeks ago.
Our solicitor said that - in her opinion - we'd be 'more than lucky' to complete in time for us to leave on 21st May.
The more I think about it the more I'm convinced that everything in life happens for a reason. No need beating ourselves up about it. Another 8 weeks is a pain in the neck .... but it's not a pain that's going to kill us. I'd always managed to only allow myself to be 3/4 excited about leaving in May (always had that feeling that something would go wrong) .... now I'm only 3/4 disappointed.
The worst part of today has been breaking the news to my boys that we'll be leaving in July instead of May. There were tears and cries of 'whyyyyyyyyyyyyy'?
Ah well ...... onward and upward.
Thanks for all your kind messages. I'm OK about it all really. Just very frustrated. They do say gin & tonic and copious amounts of Walkers Sensations are a great remedy for frustration. I'll let you know it it's true.

Oh dear Diny - its so frustrating when you've got a date set in your mind that you're working towards - well on the bright side at least its not summer time in NZ!!! You can enjoy the UK spring & beginning of summer, plus at least your buyer is still keen & there's a genunie reason for the delay. 8 weeks will come around soon enough!
Take care

Oh Diny, so sorry hon. I believe things generally happen for a reason and there's often a positive to balance the negative. Sounds like you're taking the best attitude available - and that eight weeks will fly by. Will that bring the boys to the end of their school year?
Enjoy some summer sun before you go, and get out and do all those 'English' things you always meant to do (for me, that means getting into the V & A and the Tate, seeing a show or two, using my National Trust card a few times.....).

Sorry we won't be heading out at the same time now Diny but there must be a good reason for it. Maybe the extra summer here and less winter in NZ is a good reason?
I always joked that we were going to have two summers when we thought we would sell last year, now it will be two winters. You will arrive at the end of winter - that's good news ????

we are selling right now and if its any consolation, judging by some of the things i've heard people say when we couldn't be out of house, buyers are in lala land. our house is v unusual, rather nice (about to be featured in major media) and people still come through it like there is one on every street. peoplle are really losing the plot.

You're right - have thought about all of these things today :nice1
do they charge for you to move flights?
No ... we made sure when we booked the flights that we would be able to change the dates if needed (call it a 6th sense maybe). We have however had to pay more for the new flights as they fall into a different 'season bracket'. i.e. the start of the UK school hols so they have cost us 556.00 more :eek
I'm sure your family are quietly pleased that you'll be staying that little bit longer.
Yep ... they are. My frustrations are falling on deaf ears with them :laugh

So sorry to hear your news Diny :no .
We had a bit of stress with our house sale, we flew out on the 13th November (Saturday) arrived in NZ on Monday the 15th, house sale still hadnt completed, we had signed all the papers though. Luckly we suffered from jet lag and every night phoned our estate agents in the UK asking if it had all gone through and completed ok, every time they said no news yet, well I was all ready to get on the plane home :? anyway on Friday the 17th it eventually went through and we got out money but I must say it was a stressfull first week in NZ for us :wah

Now that WOULD be a hoot !!!!!!!!!!!!! :cheers :cheers :cheers
D'you know I still haven't even found out where it is
Right then .... never been too good at directions but here we go. Walking into the square from the direction of the cinema. As you enter the aquare keep going ahead. In row of shops on the right there's a Kiwiana souvenir shop. Also a dressmaking/material shop. Telecom was there for years too but not sure whether it's still there. Keep going until you are in the corner of the square. Street turns into a sort of paved area. Walk along this are for a couple of hundred yards until you reach the next street along. Turn left ..... Barista is up there, a few shops from the end.
And if you can find it from those instructions you deserve the biggest cake on the menu. We'll get there don't you worry. It's not an outstandingly wonderful place to look at but the grub is to die for.

Oohhh Diny, I'm with Jo - selfishly pleased  that you're not going just yet. But as you do best, by the time I'm writing this note, you've already fully accepted that Plan B is the better option for a variety of reasons. Your strength of character is an inspiration to me :nice1
Your gut feeling was right after all though, when we spoke on Monday you hinted that this delay was starting to look a strong possibility. The time will fly, and you'll have plenty to keep you occupied with (least of all helping me to paint the 2 remaining bedrooms and bathrooms :laugh  :laugh ) so that we can finally get our house on the market. You do need to make sure though that if Henry or Fergus bring any further friends over for their dinner, that they bring some plates & cutlery :laugh :laugh

It would be absolutely brilliant, beyond my wildest dreams. But, I think we're going to be a few months behind you guys.
