Hi guys,
I need a bit of positive this morning!
We received an email last night saying that there are no auto electrical jobs available in the whole of NZ!!
We are just about to get assigned a case officer, and then an interview and the hopefully our blue stickers.
What use is it spending all this money and effort where my husband won't even be able to find a job!!
:(
Anybody else in this boat?
I am a bookkeeper/administrator so I could probably find a job for 25,000 dollars a year but that won't be enough to sustain our family of 4.
So what now? Leave our current jobs and go over and not be able to survive!!
HELP!!! :((

hi there
hang in there. we were in the same position. we had always said we'd go for a reccie first because everyone says that it's easier to find a job if you are actually on NZ soil! That's maybe something you should consider if you have the funds. We were intending to get PR first and then go over for a reccie and activate our visas while looking for jobs.
Fortunately, after about a year of applying for jobs remotely from the UK, OH did eventually get a job, but only after lots of rejections - so don't stop trying.
I have accounts experience and was told by several agencies that it wouldn't be too hard to find me some work - so with your bookkeeping, you're probably likely to find a job relatively quickly. At least that will keep you going for a while while you OH tries to find work.
It's definitely tough! I don't think it's something you should consider unless you have enough money saved up to support yourselves in event of not finding work.
Cheer up! Stay positive.

Think long term. You've 18 months after PR before you need to even go to NZ, and even then you could visit for a few weeks, set up some interviews, then come back and have best part of 6 months to get back over there to meet the 6 months in each of the 1st 2 years rule. So question is are you going to give up now at the first hurdle or think long term and be in a great position with PR all sorted for when the market turns round and your hubby has a 3-4 month advantage over all the other applicants?

PS - we were told lots of doom and gloom while we were appying for jobs. Don't listen to it, it just gets you down! It boils down to an employer finding the right person for the job and with your PR already in the process, you don't have to worry about a company sponsoring you etc, so you're already a resident (almost) and at an advantage. So just get your OH's CV really up to date and impressive and hopefully you'll get somewhere.

Agree completely. Be aware of the challenges but don't let them or the naysayers discourage you. People do get job offers before coming to NZ and there is no reason not to try.

Hi there,
We are in the same position. We obtained PR without a job offer. But we planned this move for two years and managed to save a good amount of money in case we don't find work right away. I figure, my hubby and I got this far, we can go further. We just pray everything will work out. :)
Fingers crossed for those looking for jobs at the present time. :nice1

We also have PR, but no job offers on the table yet. We really don't have the option of moving without a NZ job since we have 2 children to support. The minute either of us has a job, we're off. One limiting factor - we're not applying for positions in Auckland.
FYI - OH is a computer network manager, but still has no bites despite being in a "high" demand area. I work in the student affairs/education sector and see very few opportunities posted. We hope the world economy picks up before our PR expires in May 2010
If can move without a job, you should go for it. Employers seem only to be interested in candidates who already reside in NZ and can start quickly.

We know that boat quite well over here! However, we don't have kids so it's somewhat different for us... Here on WHV's until March 2010... Having Medical issues which is holding up the ITA... OH can't find work and it's starting to wear us down. Even if we DO have to go back to the US, being here is worth the experience! OH lived here in 2006 and had temp jobs left & right...now he can't even get an interview.

Hi,
We are just going through the whole process, submitted ITA 28th april not heard anything yet, just waiting patiently!
We also have not got job offers but wanted to get through the process first and then sell our house and get to nz asap, and search for our jobs when we know we have PR.
We have 4 children and just feel it is the right thing to do for our family, and if we don't try then we will never know!
If you really want to do this then i would stick at it, get your PR and then you can search for your jobs and maybe go over to nz for a few weeks with set interviews knowing you have got through the long immigration process already and any employer will see that as a hurdle they don't have to wait for.
Fingers crossed
take care

We got PR without job offers and arrived in NZ without job offers. However, we had a really good financial safety net. I ended up getting part-time work quickly with my old multinational employer, but it took my husband over 4 months to get a full-time job (although to be fair he wasn't looking hard for the first few weeks when we were settling in). My husbands job wasn't particularly well paid and wasn't at the level he was working in the UK. It's now a year later and he has just managed to get another job paying a better wage that should be more interesting for him.
Anyway, I think my advice would be that I wouldn't come to NZ unless I had at least 6 months of funds to live on in case it takes that long to get work.

Totally agree. Had we been emigrating today I think I would have made OH find a job first, however in 2004 when we came of visitor visas they were snapping his hand off for his skills.
Times have changed, and NZ still has some ways to go in terms of job loss etc imho, we're a bit behind the rest of the globe. The Bebers' advice to have enough funds for at least six months survival has to be the best in the current climate.
Also note, for anyone coming over at the end of the year, December and January are the worst times to seek out jobs - it's the summer hols and Xmas and basically recruitment seems to come to a halt and delayed until after school hols finish early Feb. Some companies even shut down for extended periods during this time.
I'm going to start a "I know of a job going..." thread, might be helpful to folk at this time and perhaps give them the nod to jobs in companies that us already in NZ work for... I can kick start it with an IT position at my OH's place of work.
