Hi,

Can anyone offer us advice on areas to visit. We were in new zealand last year and had decided to emmigrate to inglewood near new plymouth (20 mins drive). However, due to job situation we are re-visiting in october/november to have a look at other areas where their are more jobs on offer, as not that many in new plymouth at the moment.
The 3 areas we are wanting to know about are palmerston north, tauranga and new plymouth (again).
We are both nurses my husband is a respiratory nurse and i am a community nurse. We have 4 children aged 13, 12, 6 and 4, they all loved the surrounding areas of new plymouth so we are wanting to find similar areas to check out this next visit!
We would want to have a look at a 20 to 30 minute drive to the main towns/hospitals so any advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you

had decided to emigrate to Inglewood

Inglewood!

I was told a while ago by a good Taranaki lad that Inglewood was NZ's "murder capital".

Good to hear that your considering other areas.:nice1

Dave.

I'd love to know by what criteria a town with a population of around 3000 people can be awarded that title.

Hi

Thanks for the info 92immigrant. However, i think you are confusing inglewood in new zealand with inglewood in los angeles usa.

Any other information on areas would be much appreciated thanks everyone.

Taurangas a beautiful place but i wouldnt want it overpopulated withmore "bloody foreigners" lol
Everywheres within 30 mins really and after more than 2 years and a few trips round NZ i wouldnt go anywhere else.
Near the beach ,near the hills , weathers generally good (hang on it sounds like rest of NZ) But there is a busy hospital and like evryone else on here we all seem to love the place:)

There are much nicer places to live in Taranaki than Inglewood (I tend to agree with Dave's comment which did come from a Taranaki local). New Plymouth itself is very nice or, if you want to be out of town, consider Oakura or Opunake. Both of these are pleasant; they're on the coast so have more choices of things to do than an inland town, and they have stunning views of the mountain (when it's not raining ).

Tauranga and Palmerston North are so different! Tauranga has gorgeous beaches, vibrant city, proximity to other areas (Coromandal etc) and wonderful weather. Palmerston North is an agricultural and uni town with windy grey weather dominating. It has its merits of course (cheaper housing and less population density) but I think they're either end of the scale in terms of migrant destination appeal!

Sorry Tauranga is full and the no vacancies sign has just gone up, you will have to go somewhere that is still accepting anyone they can get.. like Wellington or Hamilton. ;)

Hi all

Thanks for all the information and help. The 4 places we have both been offered jobs are whakatane, palmerston north, new plymouth and tauranga so need to know about these areas to make a decision that is best for us. Having 4 children aged between 4 and 13 means we have to make the best decision for them aswell as ourselves. If anyone can add to the info already received it would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much

I'd make it a choice between Tauranga and NP, unless housing affordability is a top motivation.

And I'm going to go with New Plymouth, funnyily enough!!

Just want to say, I'm not sure about the claims about Inglewood either. We've been here since November last year and not heard anything like that. I use to work with someone that lives there and she never mentioned anything...

Anyway, check the New Plymouth thread in Locations or PM me if you want any info.

Congratulations on the job offer's!!
