Do I have the police background check sent directly to immigration (from them), or do I save it and send it along later as part of my completed packet? Also, how do I make sure that all of these things (e.g., proof of work experience, phyiscals, etc., are "certified" or "certified copies"? The site doesn't make this clear enough, at least to me. Thanks for any advice.

Where are you located? I can tell you for the U.S. because that is where I am located. For certified copies, you take the originals and the copies with you to a notary, and they stamp the copy to certify that's it's a true copy of the original. You can find notaries all over the place. Usually your bank will have someone working there who's a notary.

For the police background check, I could be wrong about this but I think it gets sent to you and then you send it to immigration. Are you doing ITA? What stage of the process are you at?

Hi

The certified copies need to be photocopies of the originals that have been "certified" by a solicitor-don't send original documents as you might need them later. Basicaly, take your documents to a solicitor and they will copy & certify them for you (has to be specific text not just "I certify..." - sometimes the solicitor will just stamp and date them and provide a covering letter to say that they are copies of the original).

I don't thing the police reports can be sent to anywhere other than your registered address but I might be wrong on this one - memories not what it used to be!

The police reports etc get sent along with everything else when you send your paperwork in. At least thats what our agent is doing.

Hope this helps.

For the police check it is dependent on what type of application you are doing and what country you are needing them from. For instance for some partnership applications from certain countries NZIS requests the police checks directly.
If you are provided a link on how to get your police check then typically you get it and send it in with your application.
What type of application are you doing and where are you from?

From the US... the police certs go to you and you include that in with the ITA... Just find a notary (see if someone at you work is one) to get everything photocopied and they will stamp it with the super special stamp and you're done!

Hi,

We have recently sent our ITA into immigration london. Police checks were sent to our home and original had to be sent in with all our documents when submitting ITA.
Any documents you are sending which are not original such as birth certificate, proof of address etc need to be taken to a solicitor who provides certified copies with their details so immigration can check on them. Then you send everything in together. Hope this helps.

Good questions! I think people have explained this well. However, what I have not seen clarified on the NZIS or on the forum is whether or not work experience proof (letters of reference, proof of experience, paystubs, tax forms, etc.) or other such documents need to be originals. Most, if not all, people in the U.S. sent me things via email (scanned into a PDF file). No one usually does anything in the mail anymore, since there is modern technology to make it easier for both parties. Will immigration accept a printout of an pdf letter, as long as it is on letterhead and has the contact information of the company on it?

Thanks for all of the advice. Even though my EOI got accepted, I'm sorely tempted to just go through the regular work visa from a job offer route instead. My job is in demand and on the preferred occupations list (I'm a nurse), and I'm already set up with an agency there. The cost of a full application and the hassle of getting it done is daunting (example: 12 years of employment records, as many jobs as I've had?). I just didn't want to put all of eggs in one basket, so to speak. My goal is to be there by november of this year.

Why not do them both in parallel? You can reuse the medicals and police checks. PR will give you a lot of security in case you loose your job over here.....right now there are some ex pats being threatened with being sent home if they loose their jobs on a work visa.

Just to reiterate; if you are in the UK, police checks definitely go in with the ITA while you send it all off and the easiest way to get 'certified copies' of stuff is to photocopy the docs then take them and the originals to your local police station and someone there will do it for you - usually free of charge. This is what we did.

Ah well .....a lot of Police stations WILL NOT do this for you. Back in the UK a lot of my mates were in the Police and they told me they had been instructed NOT to do this. Indeed that is why the Police checks have been outsourced ....to allow the police to concentrate of policing rtaher than paperwork!

Just to add that if you did send origionals and copies, they are returned fairly quickly(normally). Also you are probably sending the ITA as recorded mail, and NZIS return using recorded mail.

Maybe worth comparing the cost of solicitor against the cost/hassle of certificate replacement.
