Hi my name is Ian and I move to NZ in Feb 2009 from Surrey in the UK, my partner came over in January 2008 as the last member of her family.

My recent work back ground has been Self employment, operating a soft furnishing store and a Portable Appliance Testing business alongside, may sound a bit strange I know but it seemed to work.
I was always out doing the fitting service whilst Patsy ran the store with other members of the team.

I also did a voluntary job with a statutory authority that could be quite rewarding at times.

Since arriving, I have learnt to be very patient and wait for the necessary work permit and the right job to come along. With that in mind I would appreciate any advice with regard to the following:

I came across the ideal position locally (Hawkes Bay) and duly applied only to receive a ‘phone call asking where I was prepared to work in New Zealand in order to match me with a role, obviously subject to the recruitment process. Following a discussion it turned out that the vacancy advertised did not seem to exist at the locations indicated in the original add.

I have now seen two other positions advertised in the same sort of way and would apply but can’t help but feel it’s likely to be the same sort of format.

My partner has a two year work permit and is limited to working in one job for two years, whilst mine is ‘any job, anywhere’ but for just 6 months, although in view of the immigration status of my partner I am relatively confident of any extension until the residency is worked through.

Hi Ian and welcome to the forum.

Not sure I can really help you in any way, but I do believe (from what I've read both here and elsewhere) that unfortunately this is not really that unusual. I guess the best thing is to just keep at it and hope that at some point you'll hit the jackpot ?

Hopefully someone will be along soon who has more experience in these matters to help you out.

Good luck with jobhunting and do let us know how you get on ?

Cheers,
Silver

Hello and welcome. :)

I don't know an answer either, but from what you describe, it sounds as if maybe the idea is to get more job-hunters on their books. It's a pain when you're obviously following up everything. All good wishes for the right ad to be there soon.

Hi Ian, the practice of advertising phony jobs is unfortunately all to common. Especially when it comes to job boards, I run a job board network and have experienced this first hand. Since recruiters will need to use their 'job advertising slots' they will often list a job role and then match the incoming CV's for other positions. I wouldn't be too disheartened even though it's seriously annoying. To increase your chances (if you haven't done this already) I'd contact every recruitment consultant who works in your line of work and talk to them about your profile / CV, in addition I'd find every company that could be a potential employer and ask them if they are hiring now or in the future. If they are interested in talking some more them maybe they will meet you for a coffee, if not you can send them your CV. In my humble opinion, the more people you talk to who could potentially employ you directly or indirectly isn't a bad thing. Good luck, I hope you find this information of some value

That explains a lot - I've seen so many obviously fake job adverts

Thanks for the replies and the time taken to respond. I did eventually talk to an agency about this and received the following feed back:

The practice was pretty standard and allowed them to attract candidates outside the rea of an actual vacancy
