well, i've refrained from mentioning it along the way for fear of tempting fate but mrs v has had to get a swifty morgan flight back to the UK.
Her Mum (measly 49 yrs old) has become really poorly since we left and as of today at 11am was in theatre with life threatening internal bleeding. I still dont know how she is doing but elaine hopped on the 4pm flight from welly on the basis that either she needs to be there or it will be the best waste of a trip ever.
About 6 months before we left for NZ, her mum had a car accident and between then and us leaving, the opinion was that she was suffering breathing problems for some reason due to this.
Turns out she has a large tumour in her chest which is squishing other organs and arteries. We dont know if it is cancerous or benign at this point but it seems that the biopsy caused the bleeding. it feels a bit weird sharing this with you guys but i guess i owed you that much after all my excellent positive and witty quotes to keep some balance.
Not sure what i'll be doing for the next 11 days but so far friends have been awesome and rallied round offering help with the kids. Bearing in mind I am currently living in box city!
So for all you religious types, please say a prayer tonight for both elaine and her mum and for you non believers, raise a glass and remember what's important to you. And if you drink and believe then a bit of both never hurt anybody!
She doesnt want to be in the UK and certainly not under the current circumstances so I'm also loking forward to having her home safely soon with good news:nice1

It's the hardest thing to deal with this stuff when you're so far away. Hope you get some better news soon. I hope it is a 'wasted' trip, but your wife will feel all the better for being there, rather than here worrying.

Reading your post brings home some of the other realities of moving to the other side of the world.
I feel for you as this is something we have discussed with regards to our elderly parents, don't know how we would cope if something serious happened.
Our thoughts are with you all, and praying for you too.

Good luck & I hope things work out all right - my OH's parents are getting up in years and I don't know how we would cope if something happened to one of them - I know we'd want to be there to help and it's so hard being far away.

although not of a high priority at the moment it's worth mentioning that air new Zealand will refund some of the flight costs under there compassionate program if you get the doctor to fax them and outline the urgency and necessity. no more news and Elaine would be in LA now.

Glad you mentioned this, I was going to tell you about it (in case you weren't aware) but it was already too late as Elaine was on her way.
It should also be noted that this option is also available for a sudden death in the family (you will need to be able to provide a copy of the death certificate in this case).
Hope you get some good news soon.

Sorry to hear about what happened victoria24, hopefully you'll get some news soon.
It should also be noted that this option is also available for a sudden death in the family (you will need to be able to provide a copy of the death certificate in this case).
Death certificate can be an option however the documentation needs to show proof of relationship with the people who travelled at short notice as well.
