I sent an email politely enquiring about the progress with my wife's registration application. This morning I received a reply :"Good news - confirmation of your registration was sent to you on 26/6/09", along with a registration number! This is great news for us, because it basically opens all the barriers to entry to New Zealand that were previously shut. For those interested in timelines, we submitted the application in April, so it took around 10 weeks in total. Thanks for all the help and advice along the way - it wasn't all smooth sailing!

Good luck! My advice to anyone dealing with the NZ nursing council is threefold:
1. Get in contact with a human at the other end, and get a file reference number. Having a person you can email directly is a big help with queries.
2. Courier all documents. There is apparently a bottomless pit at the nursing council, and documents disappear into this vortex. Couriering is expensive, but at least you can then track your documents, and send a courtesy email once they arrive asking for confirmation.
3. Follow up regularly. Be polite, and even apologetic, but maintain contact and check if there is any further information that they require.

Thanks Andrew! The way things are going here in SA, I'm relieved that this has happened, and I can get the ball rolling.
