Sale items being rung up properly

So, we have had two experiences now of items on sale not being rung up with the discount included. First was a pair of shoes DH bought at Dowlands yesterday. Today was a set of sheets we bought at Briscoes today. If we hadn't looked at the receipts and pointed out the discrepancies, we would have walked away having paid full price instead of the sale price. Having this happen two days in a row at two different stores makes me wonder if this is something that happens often in general. Any thoughts?

This happened to us too. We bought a bag from a sports shop and were charged full price when I queried it it was changed straight away......

Same here. It seems to be a problem with the bar code scan not being programmed with the proper discount, not any kind of bad action on the part of the cashier.

Likewise - happened to us at Briscoes the other day, and had happened to us there in the past. They'll always check if you ask, but it takes time of course.

Happens all the time, I don’t think it’s dishonesty I think its poor store IT, always check always point it out, I have done and they fixed it. Briscoes, Mitre10 and all supermarkets other than pak n save seem to be the bad.

I think that's probably right. I had a situation at Farmer's where I bought a sale item which was supposed to ring up at $35 after discount and it rang up at $7. The cashiers said 'oh, that just happens sometimes' and said their policy in those cases was to sell it at the cheaper price, as it was a fault in their system. So the errors may not always be in the store's favor!

Yes, it's all pretty slack and you do have to be careful. It's not uncommon to see stuff marked down on the shelf and for it to be rung up at the till at full price, or as mentioned above sometimes less than you were expecting. Similarly it's not uncommon to see something advertised on special in a flyer put in your mailbox or with the newspapers and find when you get to the store nobody knows anything about it.

We several times had a good experience - going to the till expecting to pay a certain amount, and finding we were only charged much less, because of a special offer on that day, or that line. (It's probably unfair to the retailer, but I'd complain if I was being charged more than I expected, but wouldn't exactly try and press the extra money onto the cashier when it's the other way round!)

Happens the world over. A friend bought some fruit on offer at lunch yesterday and as we left the shop she went to double check the advertised price against what she had been charged - sure enough it was wrong. And it was M&S!! :)

Thanks guys -- yeah, after the second time in two days, I figured this was something that we would just have to keep an eye on, but wanted to be sure it wasn't just a weird coincidence!

This does appear to be particularly 'bad' in NZ.
It was covered on a consumer program a while ago and they stated that this problem occurs on every 6th item sold, or more accurately 1 in 6 items are charged the wrong amount, and as has been said by others it isn't always in the stores favour.
So it is always worth checking your receipt from any store.

I bought a microwave oven at Harvey Norman and was not given the sale price at the register. I thought it was a little unusual that the cashier, when I told her what the sale sign had said, just re-entered the sale at that price, without doing any sort of verification.

Glad you added the exact figures involved so we did not have to use those first rough estimates. :nice1

Well the article said every 6th item and I could just see people going 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6th, right that the one that is wrong better check it :D
Although to be fair, I haven't considered the fact that it could be an IT issue and it could actually be coded into all the tills i.e. every 6th item sold please add/subtract some random value...:exit

Whenever I buy something at the warehouse, it seems there is some sale on that isn't advertised anywhere and everything scans for cheaper than it is on the tag :nice1

Hmmm, I may have to hit the Warehouse soon ;)

Interestingly enough they only experience I've had with this was at the Warehouse :p
They charged me the non sale price for something that was on sale, but I didn't notice until after I'd left (and it was $1 difference, so I wasn't too fussed). Most places you can see as things are being rung up what the price comes up as, so if you just keep the price in mind it isn't too much of a problem.

Fair point there are some really stupid people around, but they should not be allowed in shops
