I read in a book about emigrating to NZ that was published a few months ago that, When you obtain a prescription for medication you pay thr doctors fee AND the cost of the medication that has been prescribed. As some types of medication can be very very expensive can anybody advise if this is correct.
Thanks

You pay $15 per prescription unless it is a non-subsidised medicine such as Xenical. It's unlikely that any medicine you need would be unsubsidised.

If you are on low income or need lots of prescriptions, there are further subsidies available.

For example, if people require lots of medication, they are issued with a high user card. They pay $3 per item for the first 20 items. Thereafter prescriptions are usually free.
