I Asked my collegue who lives in Mt Rosskill - quite integrated cultures there he said.

I asked if there was a cafe culture there, he said
"....more like $2 dollar shops culture...."

He did suggest Mt Eden, 10mins from Mt Rosskill which is nicer - but if you we're planning on comuting to Mt Wellington your going accross major routes into the city.

According to the book "where to live in Auckland", here are the information about Mt. Roskill :

If you move to Mt. Roskill, you'd better bring your Bible. That's been the traditional view of this suburb with its wealth of churches and reputation for fundamental Christian thinking. That's changing a little as the area attracts a growing range of races and religions. With the incoming immigrant families, it now also has many more children than it once had.

WHO LIVES THERE?
The area doesn't tend to attract many first home buyers. These days it is very multicultural - according to government statistics there are 169 different ethnicities represented in the Mt. Roskill borough. Many of the people buying into Mt. Roskill and Sandringham continue to be Indian, Korean, Chinese and Somalian plus a minority of Middle Eastern peoples. One agent estimated that 80% of recent buyers have been immigrants, with the remaining 20% consisting of New Zealanders buying investment properties. As one agent put it : "the area used to be Auckland's Bible belt - now it's more like downtown Bombay."

TYPICAL DWELLINGS
Mt. Roskill was mostly developed in the 1950s. There's a mix of brick base, tile roof weatherboard bungalows, and brick-and-tile bungalows of 1950s vintage - good modest subruban homes. Solid ex-state houses are also common. Extensive subdividing and infill housing means there are now also many new townhouses and single-level modular houses. About 70% of subdiviable properties have already been chopped up. Mt. Roskill South is a subdivision developed from the 1980s onwards with excutive-style homes.

I hope this will give you some idea about this place.
