Another Dutchie here.
Whereabouts does everyone come from? I myself live in Eindhoven and I have seen some others from that same area as well.

One more Dutchie reporting in.
Not much chance of us making it to a Dutch meet though as we live in Wellington.
I'm from Amsterdam and the OH is from Rotterdam and we both prefer Welly! :nice1

Hallo allemaal
Yes another Cloggie reporting in, but like Miep not able to make an NL meet - have been living in the UK for the past 15years :eek Hope you all have a great time.
Do post it if you arrange any further meetings. We're due to say our goodbyes in Holland in August, so you never know if there's another meeting taking place maybe we'll be able to say hi to you all then :nice1

Another Dutch one. And just like Miep, I already live in New Zealand. In Auckland though and only for 3 weeks now... Maybe we could meet when we're all in New Zealand? When some come to Auckland that is... :smile

Well, my maiden name was Voller which is of Dutch origin. Apparently we sailed over with William of Orange many years ago
By now I'm well and truly a mongrel what with all the other nationalities that have been added to my family tree over the decades :?

So, help a confused American. Is it Holland, The Netherlands, or Het koninkrijk der Nederlanden?
How do the locals refer to it?

We call it "Nederland" but to make it easier on the foreigners we say Holland as well, esp during soccer games ;)
Btw I really hope to be able to be at the dutch meet! :P

Well let me have a go at answering this, though there may be some other opinions to follow . . . (hope I've remembered my history lessons ok :? )
The Netherlands is the correct way to refer to my country of birth when talking in English. When speaking in Dutch I would say 'Nederland'. The word Netherlands / Nederland stems from the fact that most of the country is below sea-level (this is also followed through in French as 'Pays-Bas').
The word Holland is also perfectly acceptable to use, but I only tend to use this when speaking in English i.e. 'I used to live in Holland'. If I were to be speaking in Dutch and referring to Holland, I would enhance this by saying 'Noord-Holland' or 'Zuid-Holland', which are 2 provinces within the Netherlands. Have I started to bore you yet  ???
Finally, very impressed with you knowing the term: 'Het koninkrijk der Nederlanden' :nice1 which translated is 'The Kingdom of the Netherlands'. This is more than correct, but is not really used on a day to day basis by it's citizens.
What would I say? - well I'm Dutch, I was born in the province of Noord-Holland, but haven't lived in the Netherlands for 15years :laugh
Bit long-winded but expect this answers your question, time to go I think :exit

Not boring at all! (hey, I asked, didn't I?). Just helps me when I hear "Dutch" Holland" and "The Netherlands" used interchangably. Never want to offend by choosing one the locals consider rude.
