Myself and my daughter arrived here in January 2009. We have been here struggling financially since then, awaiting the arrival of my OH to sell the house in the UK.
Just over a month ago two people were made redundant where I worked. I have a meeting on Monday 20th July. I will be made redundant. I have no cash and I rent a property that costs $350 per week. I am a fully qualified decorator and I don't want to return to the UK any suggestions Guys.
I won't give up, not without a fight!!

could you move anywhere else within nz if there is no work going where you live? what about going it alone and getting some flyers done up to distribute? maybe with the current housing downturn, people are doing up their houses rather than selling to move on? or perhaps target houses that have been on the market for ages and suggest some "house doctoring" to help shift the sale and getting work off the back of that? maybe network with estate agents as they want to drive sales?
can you get work off the local council?

I agree with Victoria. A mate of mine is a painter and decorator...that is to say he runs the business. He seems to be very busy still.
He's a Brit but been here a long time....I can ask if he's looking for guys if you like....but it is in Wellington.

ignore the hourly rate I think they just throw that in. I search Christchurch but nothing on their site. But several for Auckland & Queens Town area. Not very good with geography so not sure which other towns are near you. I obliviously know Auckland is not but can you move??? You have to search each town
I just did a search on Painter.

Would you be able to find a cheaper place to rent? I know it might not be what you want... but it's a way to save some money! We're starting to look into it as well, in case OH doesn't get this job. :(

I am sorry to hear of your situation Pitkennedy and second the suggestions offered by everyone above :nice1
Reading the title of your thread, I empathise with how you must be feeling at the moment. We all knew emigrating isn't going to be a walk in the park but I've also felt the harsh bite of reality, which made me realize the wide chasm between knowing and actually living the consequences!
I am certain that those words in the title of your thread have rung in the minds of more than some of us in our forum. In my moments of frustration, I find comfort in the warmth and fellowship of our forum. I seek inspiration from the lyrics to the song Keeping the Dream Alive... "The game will never be over because we're keeping the dream alive" and emerge stronger!

If you're interested, I could give you the details of a company I use as a property manager in Auckland and they always seem to be pretty busy. Never hurts to ask if there's any work if you're willing to relocate.

Oh bgr eh!
I know this has been said already but you really need to move if there is no work. A lesson I found quite hard to understand here in NZ is the regional employment diversity, it’s extraordinary.
Apart from anything else the opportunity for exterior decorating between Christchurch and Auckland is probably doubled in Auckland just because of the weather.
The UV levels in NZ make decorating a difficult task, and robust materials are expensive, you look for a pro to decorate! Particularly for the exterior.
I’m in Wellington, and I’m struggling to find a someone to paint my house!
Good luck Bob

Good luck!
We have been in a similar situation ourselves. Hubby lost his job in March following an accident last July, and couldnt give his employers a date of return to work. Then a week later ACC stopped his money.
Life has been (and continues) to be very hard but i guess we have my wages coming in.
We are at our wits still but are determined to stay positive. Its hard and no day is the same i can tell you. Its been one emotional roller coaster.
Take care and if you want to vent, PM me.
