We arrived back to the U.S. two weeks ago and just found out our container has been put on "hold" by the USDA so they can inspect it for the New Zealand mud snail! I guess they are an invasive species here in the U.S. This is more trouble than we had with MAF when we shipped our stuff to NZ! :uhoh

It's an extremely necessary step to take. Have a read here (http://mudsnails.com/).

Quite possibly! Anyone know if it's still contained on the South Island or if it's come north yet?

When I was there last year we had to get our wetsuit dipped in cleaner by a DOC worker known as Didymo Dave. Done that job for years, and is now world famous:D

I'd never heard of these beasties. Apparently, they're no problem in NZ because there's also a resident worm that preys on them and keeps the population within bounds - it's the absence of anything to eat them abroad that means they take over other environments.

Thanks for the link Msquared- they are so small- I don't know how they would find them- would they even survive a several month long journey in a container?
Thanks GrumpyGoat- we made it back just in time for summer here! Hope all is well with everybody!

Yep we moved back to Mercer Island which is just across the bridge from Seattle (and actually similar to where we grew up in PV). Our house never sold so its an easy transition so far. Its nice to be home (especially for the kids) but we will always have a soft spot for NZ and definitely plan to visit. Good luck with everything and keep in touch! :cheers
