Dear all,

I am a new member in this forum. I am applying student visa for studying 3 years PhD at Lincoln Uni. I have been waiting for 6 weeks since my medical report was sent to medical assessor in Wellington. It happens given that my BMI is over than 35. Based on my GP report my blood pressure and cholesterol are normal. I also do not suffer any serious sickness.

For that reason, I just want to know whether somebody who apply student visa might be refused by immigration?.

If some of you have some experiences like me, please share with me.

Hello and welcome. :)

If your BMI is very much over the 35 guideline, you may find they ask for another doctor's report after a certain specified time, to see if you have reduced your weight (so while you wait to hear, it's worth eating sensibly and taking lots of waist-reducing exercise). I'm basing that on hearing what has happened to some people on the forum

If you were refused, you do have the option to ask for a medical waiver - look on the NZIS website for details.

thx mod....I don't think I might have medical waiver since I applied student visa and I have no family sponsor on NZ.

Come on....any other students have some problem like me???please share here.....

I applied for a student visa almost four years ago with a BMI way above 35. The standard medical form said to get a fasting blood glucose test and to send Immigration the results. That's what I did, and got my student visa soon after.

They have changed the student medical form since then, but hopefully you won't have any problems.

Hi sweetpea,

lucky you, hopefully i would have same as you. btw, how long did you wait for the visa? I have been waiting for 5 weeks. NZ embassy in my country said that it would take a time around 6 weeks. Hopefully within next week I would hear the good news from the embassy.

I read from another forum that there is a student who have been waiting for the visa since march 2009. I am just wondering whether MA/NZ immigration does not have a standard time to give a response.

No, there isn't a standard time. I know it's hard to be patient, but it's just a matter of waiting while your application filters through the system. There's no way to tell how many were in the queue ahead of you when your package got to the office, how quickly the COs are working, how complicated the cases before yours are, etc., etc..
