Immigration New Zealand will tell tourism and hospitality workers seeking renewals of temporary work permits whether they are likely to get one a month before the expiry date, Immigration Minister Jonathan Coleman says.

The news report does not tell why it is only tourism and hospitality. it only mentioned:

Dr Coleman said in some parts of the country tourism relied heavily on overseas workers.

I know Queenstown is heavily reliant on temporary migrant workers and is unable to fill those roles year round with local people. I read an article where the businesses were saying they were hard hit by the new guidelines so this may be aimed at them.

I think that part of the reason for the crackdown is the sheer number of people coming back from the UK / Europe as they no longer have jobs there.

Judging by London bars and hotels many of these people will have hospitality experience so it could be a way of decreasing unemployment here - as people on work permits will end up going home (which could push the problem over there - or, if home is Europe, force more Kiwis back here!).
