Hello folks, just a quick question - I've been scouring this and the NZIS websites trying to find an answer to no avail.
I heard from a doctor that if a British citizen is taken ill in New Zealand, and they aren't residents of NZ, they are entitled to free healthcare as the UK Government pick up the tab. Is this correct. Also, what sort of healthcare provisions exist for those people in New Zealand on short-term work visas, etc.
Thanks for your help!
Stuart.

My husband and I just signed on for 6 months Southern Cross health insurance while we wait for residency, etc. It is reasonably priced ($583 for six months for a family of two) and my agent indicated that it covers everything except regular checkups and maternity.

The cost for health care is highly dependent on age!!!
The 583.00 for 6 months for two people is very low in my opinion - I guess you guys are still pretty young.
I pay around NZD 30.00 (one person) per two weeks but that is only for hospital and specialist care - so no dentist, no gp, no prescriptions and a lot of exclusions and limitations.
Cheers,
Anita

Thanks for the info everyone, you're all incredibly helpful. It seems as though whilt my partner are here on short-term visas, we don't need to worry too much about getting healthcare cover, but once we move onto our longer-term visas, we'll need to look into where we stand - since we'll not be short-term visitors and nor will we be residents.
Thanks again! all this information is incredibly helpful, and it's a relief to be able to get straightforward answers after hearing so many conflicting opinions.
