Inter-island moving questions!!

We've now got a few quotes in for our impending move from Auckland to Canterbury in October. Unfortunately our favourite local moving firm (Smooth Movers....highly recommended) are unable to move us as they don't have a big enough lorry so we're considering the following:

Crown
Allied Movers
Conroys

Does anyone have any experience for any of these companies for either national or international moves? Do any of them have a bad reputation? Has anyone made a similar move and is willing to share the cost? We are getting quotes ranging from $5 to $7.5 :exit for about 37m3 worth of stuff. Any other companies you can recommend?

Second question is that there are options of transporting our stuff in a container via rail or a boat from Auckland to Lyttleton, or over land by truck. Which poses most risk of damage to contents? I thought there might have been more risk in a lorry given the nature of NZ roads, but someone informed me today that the risk was higher in a container due to the lack of tethers to secure furniture and that the train was the highest risk option (although the quickest) because when the carriages shunt the stuff can shift inside the container. I have no idea which options pose the greatest risk and am worried about it as we had a few items damaged when we moved from UK and I don't wish to repeat the experience.
