Hi all, we are hoping to come to NZ to live next year, and was wondering if we bring a car over how long can we use it on the roads b4 we have to regester it in nz?

It needs to be inspected and get a Warranty of Fitness (WOF) before it's on the road at all (ie you cxan't even drive it to the garage for the inspection).

NZ rules are differernt. Based on stuff I've read, cars less than 2 years old need the WOF every year, over that it's every 6 months. Deisel is even more weird where you also pay in advance for a milage (or kilometrage?) related tax, so the disc expires in 6 months or at XXX,000 kilometres.

Check the rules regarding import tax on cars less than 12 months old if there's a risk that will occur.

As for where (or even when) then it's all up in teh air at the moment. Plan A was Christchurch next Easter. Plan F is Auckland 2011. There are a few variants between those though, depends a lot on UK house sale and potential sale price.

FYI, unlike an MOT, in NZ all cars need a WOF every year (or 6 months if an old car).

...

•Vehicles first registered anywhere less than six years ago must have WoF inspections every 12 months.
•All other vehicles must have WoF inspections every six months.

You are confusing two different things here. There is the rego which is exactly the same as UK road tax, you pay per month and the cost depends upon the weight/class of vehicle, and there is Road User Charge (RUC) which diesel vehicles pay per km again the amount depends on vehicle weight. They are two separate tickets displayed on the windscreen.

The UK does diesel differently: road vehicles use white diesel which has tax included and other vehicles such as tractors use red diesel which is taxed at a lesser amount. In NZ it is all 'red' diesel and the road vehicles pay their tax in the RUC. It's a better system really because it is more difficult to avoid!

Not sure about a new imports but I think you are allowed to drive a car to and from a WOF centre, without it holding a valid WOF.

if its a new import then it will need to be trailered to compliance centre,
if its already registered in NZ with number plates already on then you can legally drive it a WOF station to have the test done then take it home or to a place of repair. if your stopped by the police at 10pm then you will most likely get a $200 fine for no WOF as do not know any wof stations open at that time!!
