A question for contact lens wearers

I currently pay UK£28 for 30 pairs of daily disposable contact lenses (-9.50 and -10.5).

Is there anyone who can let me know how much 30 pairs would be in NZ?

Many thanks

I order my lenses from this company - great service, overnight delivery, competitive pricing: www.lensesonline.co.nz/

I currently use Daysoft, http://www.daysoftcontactlenses.com/ they are dirt cheap and do the job. They also deliver to NZ!

Thanks for this Vanessa. It is the Daysoft I wear. I always wondered why my optician had not charged me for fitting, now I know! I could save £14 every time I ordered if I ordered on line!! In the three sets he's supplied me he has probably covered his costs!!

Capuccino I will have a look at the NZ site too, but chances are I will ensure that the daysoft are OK before I head out and get a six month supply on line before leaving. Then find an optician out there once I get there. My basic problem is often that more popular makes don't make lenses strong enough so I need to be quite careful.

I also buy online from lenses online, and have just spent $99 on 6 pairs of fortnightly disposables (which will last me 3-4 months) and a job lot of solutions. I can't remember exactly how much I used to pay in the UK, but I think that compares fairly well. Buying online is really easy now you don't have to supply a prescription, but I do make sure I have at least annual 'eye health' check ups as well as sight tests.

i use a rigid gas permeable lens so don't know the prices of the soft lenses, but do bear in mind the 100ml rule when flying and make sure you don't have a big bottle of solution in your bag, i found some travel packs at a chemist!

I am so shocked by the price - it is unbelievably cheap. I just bought daily lenses, 2 boxes of 30 and I have payed 50 euros. :wah And it is cheap here,...:uhoh

Is this an NZ thing or something I've missed in the UK? Last time I looked they all asked for a recent prescription or a referral to the chain optician.

I use contacts2go and buy 90 pairs of focus dailies, which cost me about $190 I think the last time. I think I paid GBP22 for 30 pairs when I lived in the UK and that was from specsavers.

Do we need a prescription in NZ? How much is a contact lens exam?

I mean, I know my prescription (I have worn contacts for 25 years and the prescription hasn't changed in 15 years) so it is silly to make me pay for a new exam every year (in the US).

Who can we order from NZ without getting a new prescription?

You can buy lenses online from plenty of places without a prescription, but the point of an exam isn't just to check for prescription changes, but for eye health and associated checks too. Regular eye checks are especially recommended for lens wearers because of the nature of having a foreign body in direct contact with the eye.

This is what they tell me each time I have to pay $100+ to get the same prescription year after year.
I do have some mild scarring in my eyes (around 12 years ago but hasn't changed in 12 years) but there is no treatment for it so what's the point in examining it every year?

Now, I can understand the annual exam for younger people whose eyes are changing or for people new to contact lenses. But I am too cynical to believe that it is in my best interest (and not in the dr's financial best interest)

Personally, I have worn contacts too long and not disposed of or re-ordered soon enough. Why? Because my darn prescription ran out and I want to stretch what I have (disposables) for as long as I can to avoid the cost (and trouble) of the exam and the reorder.

In fact, I have been stretching out what I have from the US trying to avoid having another exam here as I REALLY don't want to part with the money here (being so much poorer than the US --where I was just cheap).

So no exam = better eye health for me:cheers

What places online offer contacts w/o a prescription? Anyone know of names of web sites?

On Contacts to go you have to input the name of your optician but once it's in there it's there for good (or until you remove it). I've not seen the optician who gave me my prescription for at least two years and I've actually changed my contact lenses in that time (went from toric monthly lenses back to focus dailies, which is what I used to wear before changing to toric. Toric were for my astigmatism but being monthly they gave me more infection than the dailies, which don't help me at night. Catch 22 situation).

I think you will need just one exam and then you will be sweet. I can recommend anyone from Visique.

www.clearlycontacts.co.nz you don't even have to put in the name of an optician. You just have to know your current prescription, and lens sizes which you can usually get off your lens box.

If there was a little "kissie" emoticon, I would post that one but since there isn't :nice1:clap:cheers:raebanana
