Hi, my sister moved to NZ last year. When she has been there 3 years she wants to sponsor myself my husband my 2 children and my mother. The only problem is my Dad. The sponsoring family rules state that he would also have to come. The problem is that my Mum and him have been divorced for over 20 years and none of us have had any contact with him since. Does anyone know if would stop us emigrating in 2 years...Really hope not as we are really have our heart set now!!! Any info would be great!!!!

I'm not sure about any rules saying he must come - where does it say that?? I am here as a sponsored parent but am divorced from my son's father and have remarried. I am the principal applicant and my 'new' husband is here with me.

Hi
I am being sponsored by my son and I have not read anywhere where you have to sponsor someone who you are divorced from!!!

Rules have changed from February 2009 - in that after you are eligible to sponsor your mum it could be up to 2 years after the date the application goes in before your Mum will hear anything and a further 4 to 6 months before she is allocated a Case Officer. Its a long wait ahead - and I am still waiting to hear. Applications are going in strict date order - it doesn't matter which New Zealand Immigration Branch your Mum sends her sponsorship forms to. Which is much fairer for everyone.

Good luck.
