Cheese!!!!!!

I was in the gym last week watching the telly news when I saw this story
http://business.scoop.co.nz/2009/09/02/nz-cheese-makers-can-use-raw-milk-await-costs/

...and nearly did a little jig of delight. We've got so fed up of the overpriced yellow rubber that passes for cheese in the supermarkets here. We ended up chucking a home made pizza in the bin this week cause the 'mozzarella' was just awful (and we never waste food). And whilst we have found a couple of places to buy (expensive) french cheese, I long for a lovely chunk of blue vinney or crumbly welsh goat.

So does anyone fancy coming on a cheesemaking course with me, or have a goat/cow they'd like to rent out? ;)

Roll on proper cheese!

good news indeed...there are some good cheeses around, but you do have to pay for them... a bit like getting a good sausage.

On exploring for quality food here I have found http://www.cheesemongers.co.nz/

I had cheese from this monger and it was great, as good as any cheese monger I have been to to in Europe and all the cheese I had was all Kiwi and I was very pleasantly surprised and I will become a weekly visitor.

I have being buying Mainland vintage for kids lunches etc and its not to bad.

With good food comes good prices! General you pay for what you get. No highly processed food in my house!

A quick google shows Parmigiano Reggiano (http://www.mediterraneanfoods.co.nz/p229/PARMIGIANO-REGGIANO,-ITALIAN,100gm/product_info.html), so yes it is available in NZ.

No idea how available it is though in local stores?

Easily available in most supermarkets. Expensive though (as it is everywhere).

I highly recommend getting a dairy goat. If you want any info please PM me.
Or a Jersey cow is nice as well.

I have all of the above.

I intend to move into full scale cheese production this summer. But just for fun (and eating, of course)

I really only want the easier cheeses like Fresca and Feta and Mozzarella.

Now I love a nice bit of chesse, especially with a large glass of red wine, but please don't get me started on goat's cheese!!:uhoh

To me, it tastes as bad as the animal smells!!!!:exit

We went to the Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival (http://www.cheesefestival.co.uk/) down here in Dorset this weekend. Such a wondrous place for the cheese lover (and zoiderr, ale and cake lovers..).

Maybe one day we should hold an ENZ cheese awareness day, in honour of all that is yummy *lol*

Only the male smells bad. Bromus. and YUCK!

My goats smell better than dogs. :laugh

And the milk tastes the same as cow milk--creamy and good. It has no smell or weird taste. Plus, no allergens and more easily digestible. More people globally drink goat milk than cow milk.

The cheese is fabulous--not smelly or weird. Unless you want to make smelly and weird kinds of cheese.:D

It was, and if you can manage Cardiff in a couple of weekends: The Great British Cheese festival (http://www.thecheeseweb.com/contentok.php?id=298&section=176)! Complete with a CAMRA tent full of real ales, ciders and perrys.

(we won't be there though.. I'm jumping out of a plane that day :clap )

that looks great! unfortunately we'll be in dorset (lulworth) for the weekend at a little ale fest (and, with any luck, to enjoy the scenery!). :)

Hmmm, if nothing changes, wrap up warm - Dorset is flippin' freezing in strong nor'-easterlies at the moment.

I LOVE goats cheese.....but I can definitely taste the difference between cow and goat milk. Goats milk on cereal or in tea/coffee tastes very strange, although it works fine in savoury dishes.

Got hold of our first batch of this seasons milk and Clare made some Mozzarella

Very easy by all accounts, you whack some milk in the microwave with some citric acid and then heat up so that the curds and whey separate and then take it out and keep stretching it a bit like kneading bread. Give it a 10 sec blast in the microwave and then more kneading till about 15 mins later you end up with this

Used on pizza for tea and very yummy :clap:clap
