Where to live in Dunedin

Well, we have lived in Auckland for almost 2 years now, and want to move somewhere that more reflects the feel of NZ. Dunedin has come up and whilst we would want to live close to the sea and be north facing - achieving that is somewhat difficult. Arguably the best suburbs - Maori Hill and St Claire have areas that are sun compromised or not north facing. We have therefore come up with a short list (in no order of preference) of Brighton, Waitati or Portobello/Harwood.
Do any of you who live or have lived in Dunedin any knowledge of these areas - we would be keen to hear your views :D
Thanks

I wouldn't rule out Maori Hill or St Clair just yet, there are plenty of north facing properties in either. Other better thought of suburbs are Roslyn and Waverley. I note the 3 others you mentioned are all a bit out of town, 20-25min drive away. That may or may not suit your requirements. Other suburbs to have a peek at (imo) include Waverley, Anderson Bay, Helensburgh, Opoho, Belleknowes, St Leonards and Macandrew Bay.

Yeah, I have Roslyn and Waverley in my sights together with some of the bay neighbourhoods you mentioned - they are all closer to town. Although commuting wouldn't be a problem unless we were right out in the peninsular. We would need to test that out.

Hi,
I once lived up in the Leith Valley and had to use the car to get into town as we lived further up the valley than the bus travelled, it was great up there the feeling of being out in the sticks but only within 10 minutes of the city centre....but did have some weather issues, beacause of the elevation the area was prone to frequent foggy days..we would travel into town and it would be beautifully sunny?
The second property we rented was on the peninsular at Company Bay...what a place! two million dollar view over the Harbour and a regular Bus service....this meant that I was able to leave the car at home... took about 20 mins to get to the Octagon!!
