OK, I may sound like a hippy wanting to eat pulses, but its a very important issue for hubby!
I noticed with dismay on the living in Australia programme currently on one of the sky channels that you cannot get dried peas, and someone from UK was bringing some, you know the things I mean, the ones you make mushy peas with? (marrowfat)
Can you get them in NZ?
Also can you get Pinto Beans, as I make mean refried beans, and they are kind of essential for that!

Definately can get them!!
My stepmum used to have a Health Food Shop - and we sold thousands of garbanzos (chick peas)
Also loads of red lentils etc.
Health Foods shops are very common and so is the bulk bins place - cant remember name of it!
Also black eyed beans and other lentil type things (sorry - massive junk food fan).

I'm not so sure you can get em actually...you want the Bigga marrowfats in a cardboard box with a big old tablet of ( ...what is that stuff? Something nasty if memory serves )

...anyway - never seen em. Closest I got was some split green peas (not the same at all). Pinto beans are go though!
I don't think mushy peas are quite the delicacy over here as they are back in England :(
Funny, it reminds me of the time when some politician or other a few years back (mebbe Mandelson) went into a chippy somewhere in Yorkshire to show how down with the oiks he was, and he asked for a side-order of some of that nice guacamole to go with his fish 'n chips!! :laugh

Ah well one out of two is not bad, you probably cant get the pies to go with the peas either!
But Mexican dinners will be fine!

What??!! You can't get mushy peas in NZ? :eek
Oh my god, no-one told me that - stop everything, I'm going to rip up my visa in protest!
I'm a Yorkshire tyke through and through, brought up on lard, coal, offal and mushy peas with mint sauce.
You put them on to boil 3 months ahead of time and they turn out champion. Serve them up with a side order of dripping and you're good to go.
The more luminous the colour of the peas, the more tasty they are - and you'll be bouncing off the wall for hours (get loads done!).
Perhaps I should pack a tin to take with me?
ps - I'm a muesli-eating seed freak now, so congealed fat and animals' innards are just a distant memory ...

I've had this conversation at work several times this last month. "Can't get DECENT Mushy Peas"! Yip new World do the small tins of Batchelors, yuk and at $2.30. But if you want ya bangers un mash wi' gravy an mushy peas, they will have to suffice.
I will be going into health food shops and Moshems (Indian store) to look for dried peas. Hopefulyl i find em then i can get some good ol' Pea Soup on the go. :nice1
BTW, Kiwi's think i'm insane cos of the mushy peas issue!
John :cool
