How much do you pay for a haircut?

I have just about managed to peel myself off the floor :uhoh
I desparately need a haircut, and having rung a good half dozen hairdressers in the local area (Albany/Brown's Bay)...it seems the going rate for a cut and blowdry seems to be about $65-$75, which is a hell of a lot more than I paid for a cut at the beginning of the year at one of the said establishements. Is this the going rate these days or just inflated prices in my local area/Auckland?
And yes, there are some of the cheaper drop in type hairdressers, but I have really thick hair that takes quite a while to cut.....I've never had a good cut from anywhere that wants you in and out in half an hour as they never do a final snip once it's dry.

I don't pay for haircut's Familyofmonkeys, because I cut my own hair, my three kid's hair and my very trusting Hubby's hair. :nice1
Been doing it for years now, after observing how hairdressers do it. If I say so myself, I have become pretty darn good at it too!!
If you lived closer I would cut yours for free. :nice1

:)
I cut the rest of my families hair, and many many years ago when we were poor students my OH did 'attempt' to cut my hair a few times.......and when I say this I mean that I had long hair at the time and all he was required to do was trim in a straight line. There is no way he would attempt to cut layers into my hair now.......

I'm not sure how much I pay for the cut, because I have mine coloured at the same time, but I would guess it's in the region of what you are saying.

Gulp! I pay $3 for a cut, the most expensive in town is $15, I guess there are some advantages to living in a developing country!!!

I never ask for a blowdry as they never do it 'my way' and it saves me some $ at the same time. I pay about $35 for just a cut.

I went to a drop in place in the mall and talked to the stylist about what she thought. Worked out surprisingly well. I have a lot of very very fine hair that doesn't much respond to anything. I've cut it myself in the past, but only when it was longer. The stylist knew just what to do with my hair (first one I've ever met that wasn't baffled by it) and I'm fairly pleased with the result.$25 Might be worth going to a cheaper place and chatting with them?

I used to go to those drop- in places in Dunedin all the time we lived there (HQ had several places in town) and apart from one occasion I was usually quite happy with the cut- and they cut the hair "dry", so no washing beforehand (which I do every morning anyway), just spraying it wet. That cost $20 in the beginning, going up to $23 in the end, I think.
In Blenheim I go to a hairdresser which was recommended by a freind and I pay $38 for washing, cutting and blow- drying.
But that's Blenheim, I suppose;)..., not Auckland

You could try the salon schools - that way you get a cut a bit cheaper, but they have experienced staff on hand and they do a thorough job rather than wanting you out the door in 5 minutes :) (about $25 in the CBD)
I had a disastrous trim from one of the drop in places at the weekend, my 'trim' ended up being more of a 'shear' *sigh* just waiting for it to grow back now :( that said I had been to the same place twice before and come out with what I expected...

This happened to me too in the uk. I went in on Christmas eve with my mum and we both came out and walked straight to the nearest shop selling hats!!!:exit

$65 is about right..some places do levels of cost (short, medium, long) and charge depending on whether it's a restyle or a trim etc. You've got to think of the breakdown of costs too.I think for main centres it's about average though you can probably find cheaper if you head to the 'burbs or smaller salons.

I pay $80 for colour/wash/cut/blowdry with a lady in Arkles Bay who works from home. I've been going to her for the past 2 1/2 years and am very satsified. She's very professional and I love the one-on-one approach. PM me if you'd like more info...

You're most welcome, I'd happily recommend her anytime, she's brilliant :nice1 ! I'm also delighted with her prices as they are far better than what I used to pay in Holland :uhoh !
Good luck with your journey to NZ !

I will need to find someone....currently a neighbour does it and I will be looking for recomendations too..unfortunately I have a phobia about hairdressers the way some people have about dentists. Does anyone have any recommendations for the ChC area and can they give me an idea of price?
DH and the boys use the strimmer (oops...hair trimmer!) but I don't want to resort to a number 4!

I pay $160 for a cut, colour, conditioning treatment and blowdry (well, they shove me under those warming red light thingys) with top colourist/stylist at Rodney Wayne, Riccarton. I've always paid heaps for my hair - I'd starve to make sure I got a good cut :D

I am with Moorf on this one! I have always had really thick curly hair and am totally paranoid about bad cuts! So when I find a good hairdresser I stick with them. When I first arrived I was paying around $85 for just a cut and blow dry but found a really good place locally now for $65 so I think thats pretty much the going rate.

Thank goodness there's someone else, I almost didn't dare to write this for fear of appearing frivolous and wasteful... :)
I pay the same at Rodney Wayne, the one in Sylvia Park. Very happy with the cut. When I had it all the same length and really straightforward, I went to the Sharing Shed, but then decided to treat myself (being worth it an' all...).

 OH would chop up my credit card for sure if I ever spent that much on a haircut :)
I got a recommendation for a little local place I didn't know about to get my haircut/blowdry for $48, apparently popular with the school mums, who look like they have 'nice hair' so I figured i'd get a reasonable cut. I'm never going to be one of those people who has gorgeous locks as I never have time to get near a hairdryer in the morning, but I don't want to end up a complete mess. Anyway.....OH had to B****y work late didn't he, so I had to cancel

I won't even tell you how much I was 'stung' for the first time I had a cut, colour and blow dry. I asked when I made the appt how much it would cost (fancy salon in Wellington), but they said it would depend esp as I have long and thick hair. On the day, I asked the hairdresser again how much and she said approx $150 but when I got the actual bill..... lets just say it was a heck of a lot more. I think its cos she knew I had just arrived from London and in her mind anybody that is prepared to pay London prices, would be naive enough to pay them here too.
I complained at the cost but they shrugged their shoulders and I never went back there again!!

I pay about $180-$200 for a cut and colour or about $90 for a cut. I justify this by only visiting the salon every few months and tolerate looking dire in between and by cutting my daughters' hair myself. I had long rubbish hair for years and my husband treated me to a decent salon restyle and colour for my 30th birthday, which made me feel so lush I can't give up going.

Oh phew, people have started to come out with some prices that are closer to mine, so I feel better about coming clean now. I pay $120 for a simple cut and more complex colour with blow dry and straightening in Cambridge. I try to hold off and only go every 4 months. I LOVE it, and there's no way I'm cutting back on it.

After searching long and hard to find the right hairdresser here in Tauranga I can honestly say that I feel no guilt whatsoever in paying $80 for a cut and blow with a top stylist - add another $100 for highlights,( which I probably do 3 times a year ) and i'm well pleased. Never had so many compliments on the colour and style, and it is sooooooo manageable that it is worth every cent.

Wow, kudos to those of you who cut your own hair! I'd probably end up looking like GI Jane if I tried :laugh
Here's a lame joke on a cold rainy day in Chch:
A woman knocked down a rabbit while driving one day. Horrified, she alighted with her companion to take a look. The rabbit seemed dead and she was horrified. Her companion said, "Don't worry, I've got something that will help."
She took out a container from the car and sprayed it on the rabbit, which soon got up. It started hopping away but would turn round every few steps to wave. The woman asked her friend, "Gee, that's a miracle! What did you spray on it?"
Her companion held up the container which had these words on it: "Hair spray- Brings dead hair (hare) back to life and adds permanent wave." :D

OK I'll 'fess up now the higher prices are coming out..
...I go to Tony & Guy in Auckland CBD and last time I went it cost $107 for a wash, cut, dry & straighten.
I have been growing my hair for over 2 years now so don't have it cut so often (used to be every 6/8wks). I wouldn't say I'm thrilled with the cut but its good, deals with split ends etc and as I'm still getting used to having long hair I'll keep going as I'm confident nothing horrendous will happen. It always takes me a looooong time to trust a hairdresser! :o
I take my son to Sharing Shed in Albany Mega Centre as his is just No. 3 all over and it costs $15.00

Food for thought:
In many parts of Asia (eg. Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.) one may commonly find many trendy '10 minute haircuts for $10' stores based on the Japanese QB House concept http://www.qbhouse.com/concept/index.html :nice1
Has this franchise and/or its competitors hit NZ's fair shores yet? Will this concept take the NZ market by storm?

I got a great cut and blow dry in Rotorua for $25! It's the salon next to my work and came recommended and I can recommend it too! I was getting my hair cut by another expat too!
I thought it was going to be heaps more so was pleasantly surprised. I didn't check the price as I was giving myself a treat and didn't care how much it was going to be as it was 18 months since the last cut!
