When and how should we notify our home country (the US) that we've moved to New Zealand?

I am from the US and now living in the UK, will be moving to NZ early next year. I didn't inform US that I have left the country. But I did register with the US embassy here in the UK (it is not required, but just so they know where you are if you need help). Also when I filed taxes the first time, I used the international non-resident form. The year after, IRS mailed the forms to my foreign address, and California stopped bugging me about state taxes.

We did this when we were living in Europe and got on the embassy distribution list to receive emails (such as travel advisories, alert info, etc.) Not sure if NZ embassy has something similar but I'm sure you could find out by looking at their website or calling.
