Folks.

We've bought a new Dyson vacuum cleaner to bring with us. Found an amazing offer at Curry's a few weeks back, compared the prices with NZ and realised we'd be 'quids in' buying it this end.

It's now stacked with all the other boxes and cartons in the garage waiting for the shippers to come. It's still in it's pristine, totally unopened box. What shall I do.

Shall I take it out of the box, give it a couple of 'distress marks', batter the carton abit and then ship it like that, or should I discard the carton completely.

I don't want to be stung for import duty on it and the way it looks at the moment it might as well have a flashing neon light over it saying 'new new new'.

Any advice would be happily received.

Chances of customs being interested are minimal.
To beon the safe side - take it out of the box hoover (or should that be Dyson) the bedroom, empty it, clean the filters then bash the box around a bit and repack it.

Most likely that MAF will be more interested than customs hence the empty and clean the filters advice.

Hey Diny,

If I were you I would just open the box, get it out and in again and nothing else. That would be fine I think. I actually don't think they will bother about a vacuum cleaner that is still unopened in the box. Only if you have, like, 10 of such boxes they will going to bother. And even if they do, I don't think you have to pay really much, it's just a small part of what the thing cost, and since it was an offer ;) .
Our stuff is getting here on Monday, also with something unopened, a DVD-player we won (YAY), so we are having the same concerns.
Anyway, good luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed :smile

Diny,

Take the filters out, then if they do look at it tell them you knew the filters had to be removed. Make sure, if there is a filters pack in the box, that it has been opened to look "used", as with the box bashing.

If the worst comes to the worst and customs are interested the GST on a Dyson won't be too bad.

Mark. :P

I don't think they would be bothereed putting GST on one item. Usually they are only bothered about GST if you intend selling it on and making a profit, which obviously you won't be. I wouldn't worry about it. it is a household item which you bought new to bring over, it's not like you've bought 10 to flog..........now theres a thought.

Going off topic here again, but can anyone local in NZ tell me if houses in gerenal have central vacuum systems? I know a lot of US and continental houses have them, but was just wondering.

Thanks,

Emily

Yes I've seen that here Emily - a friend had that in her first house.
I thought it was cool!

They are great. We have one here - I managed to convince Simon it would be a great selling point in the house :laugh - and will be sad to leave it behind. I did ask the sales lady when we bought it a couple of years ago - a New Zealander by the way - if they were common over there, but wasn't sure if she just wanted me to buy the most expensive head going. Rest assured, the attachments will all be going with me - they do all fit a normal vacuum, but if we can fit a system into a new build then I won't be complaining ;)

Be carefull of the Dyson's - they're not all wonderfull. Our new 8 filter one broke down within about 6 weeks of getting it, so we called the engineers out. They looked at it, looked at the two dogs and two children and said (and I quote) 'it wasn't designed to deal with such heavy useage'. Now, I know that we live out in the sticks, with two dogs, but I don't think that two dogs and a bit of country dust should stress a hoover too much to the point of blocking solid the filters that should never need to be removed for the lifetime of the hoover. But that's only my own experience - the older, original Dyson we had is still working, as we use it for all the buiding dust and muck over the years. It just didn't do a brilliant job any more hence the new Dyson purchase. That's it - rant over folks.

Linguistic note - in NZ 'flog' means to steal, not to sell.

I once mentioned flogging a couple of cars when I was younger, and got very strange looks until people realised what I meant.

I must remember that otherwise I'll probably keep getting arrested.
