Hi could someone tell me if they have brought a ps3 from the UK with them because my mum has bought our son one and we are not sure if the games OR dvds are compatable here in NZ.
Thank you :nice1

Well I can tell you that the US ps 3 is not compatible with the games here, but some blu-rays are supposedly region free (haven't tried this yet). (maybe some games are too?)

Hopefully someone else will be much more helpful than me. (I realise I essentially just said "I dunno.") :o

There's another thread on this, about 1 month ago with a scarily detailed list of compatibility / non compatibility for all the major consoles. Search for ps3, xbox360, dvd region and you should find it....

Are you thinking of the games consoles (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26177) thread?

That thread doesn't mention DVDs, but does say that games and blu-ray movies from UK are all compatible with NZ and vice-versa so that won't be a problem.

AFAIK, the PS3 for the UK will be region encoded to 2, whilst it is 4 in NZ, so DVDs intended for NZ market won't play on a UK PS3 (and vice-versa).

Yep, by implication then BluRays and games will be fine, NZ DVDs won't work. Obviously all your DVDs you have and bring with you will continue to work fine on that PS3. Just and DVDs you buy over there won't play on the PS3. The info on DVDs is in the 360 bit, I assume on the basis that a lot of PS3 users will tend towards the BluRays as opposed to xbox360 users that are 'stuck' with DVDs.

We rent NZ dvd's and have bought some from here and they play fine on our UK PS3 :D

As do bluerays, games from the UK and games from NZ.

As do bluerays, games from the UK and games from NZ.

Blur ray discs are region coded to A, B or C where B covers Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Russia), Oceania, and their dependencies so this is UK and New Zealand. So yes, you won't have any trouble with blu-ray discs.

DVDs though are definitely a different matter, as said before PS3 from the UK is set to play region 2 discs and PS3 from NZ is set to play region 4 discs.

The waters get mudded a bit because, some DVDs can be region encoded to work on region 2 and region 4 players, and other DVDs can be set to 'All' regions so will work on any players, and yet more DVDs say that they will only work on one region when in fact they will work on others.

So to be clear, from my previous post, if you have a DVD that doesn't match your PS3 region and doesn't say "All" regions then don't expect it to play, but it may depending on the DVD.

BTW, I have tested a region 2 (UK) DVD in a region 4 (NZ) PS3 and it rejected the DVD as wrong region code.
