Fish & Chips in Wellington

We're going to be visiting Wellington for the weekend, we'll be staying central and would love to know where the best fish and chip shops are?

And while you're at it - what's the best place to get a hot chocolate?

And finally, albeit a bit oddly, any pancake houses?

As you can see we have a very sophisticated trip planned! :D

Oh and we fly tomorrow, so answers as soon as possible....

Cheers

We love Wellington Trawling Sea Market in 220 Cuba street. It is mostly a take-away but they do have a few tables scattered around. Yummy.

Yes.. the Trawling Sea Market is really good. And just across the street you will find the Cafe Italiano... it has a fantastic hot chocolate (black or white).

Best place for a Hot Chocolate is Caffe L'Affarre on College Street (in between Tory Street and Cambridge Terrace). The atmosphere there is always great, and the Hot Chocolate is spectacular. You get a Whittaker's Santé bar to dunk in it.

You can get pancakes (actually crêpes) in Manners Mall, or Post Office Square. Unfortunately, I can't vouch for either.

I have to agree that Wellington Trawling is great for Fish & Chips.
If the weather's nice, you could always go to The Fisherman's Table on Oriental Bay. You won't get better views anywhere in Wellington, and it's $15 with an all you can eat salad bar.

Have fun Tia! Where are you staying? We're planning an overnight stay in Jan when the folks are here so need something family friendly.

Enjoy.

Just out of interest, which fish is used in NZ to make fish and chips? I presume it's not haddock! Have a good weekend, some useful information here for the future!

The Waterfront is a good place if you can handle a little wind. There's a good spot next to the Te Papa museum.

whatevers the catch that day generally :)
but seriously there is a wide range of fish used for fish and chips here, plus the tendency is to cook once you've ordered rather than the cook and keep warm fish and chips that you find in the UK... at least in the chippies I've been to

Botanic gardens would be a good place to go, just head for the cable car.

But Ian what about Cannons Creek?

Not quite the center of Wellington though is it???

If they were up that far north then Plimmerton have re-opened which would be the better choice as you can go down to the beach - not that the weather forcast is looking too great.

many many happy childhood memories of eating fish n chips sitting on the beach around houghton/lyall/island bay on a sunny evening. magic. there used to be a couple of small local fish n chip places we would frequent, but i'm sure they've long gone (or changed hands)!

Could always go to the excellent fish and chip shop near the New world in Thorndon and eat them near the beehive. Quite ironical I think. Also a good mojo there for a chocolate/coffee fix.Two good shops in Petone high street if you are that way as well.
