We are moving from Christchurch to Palmerston North in 11 days and are looking for a shipping company that could move our belongings. We will just have a dozen or so boxes, some suitcases, a bike and a stroller. Any recommendations welcome!

If there isn't much to shift have you considered a one way van hire? I had a look at this national site http://www.car-rental.co.nz/rentalvehicles.htm and it does mention that they do one-way hire although it states it is limited to certain vehicles. I would imagine that vans would be something they would hire one-way.
Just a thought.

Most rental companies like to keep vehicles on the same side of the Cook Straight. This means that if you do a one way Auckland to Christchurch you often have to drop off at the Ferry Terminal in Wellington and pick up a new vehicle in Picton, and v. v.. If you don't do this and turn up at CHC/AKL with a vehicle from the other island you could end up being hit for a huge charge to get it back to its original base.
Saves on the cost of paying for the vehicle on the ferry, but ups the inconvenience quite a lot. Thinking back to our trips to France I would have hated to have had to unload at Portsmouth and carry our stuff onto the boat...

Interesting, I've seen several ads in rental cars parked around Hagley and other central locations in Chch with a sign in the window saying "free rental to take back to Auckland" and I know some backpackers who actively look for such rentals as v. cheap transport (albeit you do have a time & mileage limit).

I think that these are the ones that shouldn't be down here in the first place!

Thanks for the above replies, but we have our own vehicle to drive north. It's just that with 4 children in tow, we do not have enough room in our car. So we are just looking for a company that does regular moves to the North Island. We were just wondering if anybody on the forum could recommend a particular company, before we start looking on the Yellow Pages.
Cheers,
Sandrine
