We today received the forms that we need to complete to get our stuff through quarantine / port.

Not sure if anyone will find this useful but here are a few details of what we received:

Covering letter stating that they require the following:

- Personal Baggage Declaration Form (which they enclosed) - this requires us to enter our personal info including address, passport no. etc It asks :

a) did you pack the baggage?
b) Does the baggage contain:

- food of any kind (raw or processed)
- Animals (dead or alive) :eek
- Plants or plant products
- Equipment used with animals or plants
- Used camping, garden or sporting equipment, bicycles, vehicles, soil, water.

c) In the past 30 days, whilst outside NZ, have you been:

- In contact with any animals?
- To a farm, abattoir or meat packing house?
- In a forest hiking, camping, hunting in rural areas or parkland?

You then have to fill in details of any other persons over the age of 17 who has stuff packed in the container.

Does this consignment contain any of the following items:

- Controlled drugs of any kind including, but not limited to, LSD, heroin, cocaine, cannabis, ecstasy, steriods or performance enhancing drugs

The above details were the contents of one form labelled NZCS 218 / NQS QD1.

************************************************** ***

Next, a MAF Enhanced Quarantine Declaration Questionnaire, questions as follows:

a) Do you have a vacuum cleaner, if so, what did you do with the bag (err ours is a Dyson so I guess we just note that down!)

b) Have you any garden tools or equipment (including lawnmowers, catchers); if so, how have they been cleaned? Did you pack any seeds with your garden equipment.

c) What type of sporting goods do you have? For example, golf clubs, golf buggies, rugby/golf/soccer/hiking or other sporting shoes, bicycles.

d) What type of food do you have e.g noodles, honey, rice, meat/meat products, popcorn ( :? ), in your baggage? If so, list them all.

e) Please list any straw, bamboo, cane, rattan and other plant product items you may have.

f) What type of medicines have you packed? Please elaborate as to whether they have any plant or animal products and in which form they are (raw/processed). Are there any herbal medicines?

g) What ornaments do you have? What are they made from?

h) Do you have Christmas decorations? If so, what are they made from?

i) Have your goods been treated before they were shipped to NZ (eg. fumigation, steam cleaning?) If so, do you have certificates?

The above is a MAF Quarantine Process Procedure Form 33.

************************************************** **********

We must also provide them with our passport (or photocopy of all pages of passport and Visa) along with the above forms. (It says the passport will be returned by courier when it is no longer required by customs).

We must also provide info on the insurance value of the goods.

I hope that helps someone :nice1

All pretty standard, indeed. This was exactly what we received too. A tip: I actually went over to our shippers' offices and filled in the forms / paid the money for the customs check there and then. Nice to put faces to names, and also quite useful to have them explain the forms and help fill them in. It seemed that they weren't really bothered about every last detail of our stuff - just making sure we had declared any camping gear, bikes or gardening equipment. That and the stuffed zebra...

Out of interest, what would happen if you said yes to having something you shouldn't? I imagine you would have a hefty fine and the article destroyed - but perhaps they take different action?

We went to NZ Van Lines Moorf and she (as in Rachel!) took a copy - wasn't letting them loose with passports!!

We don't have ANY of the articles they mention in the forms in our container, but now I'm paranoid that if I don't declare SOMETHING they'll think we're lying and check more than they would usually!! :uhoh

Have been in touch with Rachel (NZ Van Lines) - seems v. nice and forms arrived the day after she said she'd send them, and she's happy for us to go down there and go through the forms with her too :nice1 I'll reserve judgement on her "performance" (heard she can be a bit, err, unorganised) until we are in full swing.. ;)

don't worry, customs are only out to extract their cut from stuff you need to pay duty on. If you have nothing in your container - tobacco/alcohol/drugs/perfume/bisto then no worries. MAF is more serious - none of us want to unintentionally importsomething which will harm NZs biodiversity. Fortunately for those of us from the UK everything bad came here about 100 years plus so there is no real concerns now.

Just fill the forms in honestly and if in doubt write it down. Our MAF inspectors were dead cool - they got bored after the 50th miscellaneous box they had asked to inspect so we gave them the stuff we thought they should inspect that they had completely missed from the packing list. like garden furniture, garden tools etc.

When we had our cars inspected it took about three minutes per car. The immaculate, spotlesly clean, imported from OZ 6mths old 4x4 that was also in that mornings list got a 30 mins plus inspection and failed, vague traces of soil etc that could be harbouring OZ bugs.

Cheers for info Jon. However, do they charge per box they inspect, or for the time taken or what? I asked our movers what the cost for MAF would be and they said "depends on what they do" :?

MAF looked in about 8 boxes of our stuff. We were charged $80. I don't think they did more than a quick rummage Once they saw the golf clubs and bikes were clean they left the rest alone

Thank you.

I did a further dig around on the net and found this:

The rates for MAF clearance are currently NZ$35.00 for shipments under half a cubic metre (18 cubic feet) and NZ$45.00 if half a cubic metre or over. It must be noted that this fee covers clearance only, and if the Ministry decides a physical examination is necessary, a further charge will be made which will range between NZ$40.00 and NZ$100.00 depending on the extent of the examination.

(Source: http://www.excess-baggage.com/cust_nz.php#maf ) I think I'd actually viewed/posted this site before

Thank goodness the max is $100 :nice1

Our inspections were "atypical" - first $160 was on the island so we had to pay for ferry fare for the inspector $25 plus presumably some allowance for travel time so would been about $100 - she was here for about 2.5 hours in total.

Second was a smaller amount of stuff plus two cars and was at the "The Moving Co." and cost about $160 .

Taking the first as representative ($100) I'ld guess that is normal ish for a 20ft container.

Hope it all goes well.

Cheers Jon

Woz went to the local shipping co offices and handed in the forms as we had a couple of queries re some wooden objects (ancient ones too I might add - several over 200 yrs old) and we had to declare these but not any recent wooden furniture :?

Oh well, I guess they'll do what they need to do - at least we now know there is a certain limit on costs and won't be stitched up for a fortune :nice1

Wow, just a few boxes delved into and tears already :wah the photo's and the " bits" from home really got to me ... wasn't expecting THAT!

Amazed at how much of the stuff we'd forgotten we'd ever had. Exciting but VERY emotional at the same time.

Just as matter of interest how long before you left 'home' did you put your stuff into the container and how long when you arrived in NZ did you have to wait for your stuff? Wondering how long the process takes as to what sort of thing you should keep with you! (if we ever get to that stage!) :? :?

I don't think our scenario was typical - we had 2 properties in the UK. We sold our main property in Scotland in May 2004 and moved to our 2nd one in Sussex (a flat) therefore putting most of our belongings into storage in May 2004 (as 4 bed house into 1 bed flat doesn't go!). When we moved here in Sept 2004 we put the remainder in to storage.

Once we had found jobs and then found and bought a property here in NZ we THEN put in motion the shipping of our goods from UK.

From quote to arrival here dates were as follows:

16th March Quote
24th March Packed by Shippers from storage
27th March left UK
7th March arrived NZ
17th March delivered to our home.

By the way - we had NO MAF CHECKS - it was simply cleared by them without any opening of boxes (and consequently no fees)!! :nice1
