I am sure it is against the rules but I signed up for Trademe about 10 days before we arrived in NZ. (in order to contact potential rentals)
I used a friend's address and then changed it as soon as we had one here.
I do not endorse this sort of duplicitous behavior. :D

Thanks Nicki I have sent you a PM.
GG - I was going to try registering etc.. and use a motels address and number that we are staying in when we first arrive, but chickened it in case they do the checks and realise that I am not there at the moment and ban me for life or something :D!!!

Trademe do check account information and also where your IP address is based so if they detect that you are not NZ resident then they will suspend the account.
No idea how long the account will work before it is suspended (or if it will work at all - since they now also check your IP address)? And also no idea that if you breach the rules this way, how easy it will be to re-activate the account when in NZ.

Hello: I would like some help in contacting a TradeMe member, I cannot do this myself as I live in Ireland & would need your help if you can in either getting a message to a member of TradeMe or by giving this member my e-mail address which is frankmoore@unison.ie This member had for sale a set of Yamaha YL-1 mufflers that did not sell only recently, their TradeMe name is joeking1 who is "Ruth of Christchurch city" the item/s I want to buy is number listing: 263150502 I would be most greatful if I could get this members contact detail (e-mail address) or if you could pass on my e-mail address to them, perhaps you can let them know that I wish to buy their items, I understand that I may be asking a lot but I need the item urgently so, can you e-mail me directly & let me know if you can gain access somehow to this members TradeMe listing or know someone who can, the reason I joined the forum is so as I can hopefully get the required information, looking forward to your reply soon, thankyou in anticipation.

Frank, unfortunately that auction has closed.

Frank, also there's no way of getting a members email address unless you win the auction and buyers are not allowed to post email addresses or any contact details, so it looks like it's no a goer, sorry.

I put a car up for sale on Trade me last Friday and within 1 hour i had a number of emails to me phishing for my email details ect and within 30 minutes of receiving those emails trade me were emailing me to disregard those emails so they seem to have a real problem with cons and phishing........

David, there's been alot of that going on lately - it seems they are guessing folks emails, by using their TradeMe name @ hotmail (or whatever)
A surprising amount of folk use their TM name in their email addy.

It took them 12 months to detect mine i signed up when i was in NZ on the recce and used the holiday accommodation address........carried on using it upto November 2008 when they terminated my account and sent me a short and sharp mail to tell me so...........i did what i needed to do so it wasnt a problem and i had 2 mail addy's so when we arrived here in February last year i signed up again no problem just used the second mail addy. :-)

Mistake I made was signing up just after I got back from the recce and it took 12 hours to get the email bouncing me.
I think it's the IP address at registration that it the first hurdle, then perhaps it needs to be used in NZ on a semi regular basis to maintain it from the regular (annual?) review?

I found this post really interesting. I've had a trade me account for years yet haven't actually used it in NZ, always while I've been in the UK or the USA.
Used my friends NZ address to sign up with it way back when we were looking at cars for him.
Funny that I never realised I wasn't supposed to have one, and even funnier that it's still going and never been suspended. :D
Opps guess come Feb 22 I wont be doing anything wrong anymore ;)

I started my trade me account from the UK and used it to get our first rental sorted. I had no problems setting it up and just searched for the Taupo postcode on the net to be able to register. I had no idea I was being naughty under TM terms.

we set ours up from the UK and bought our van before we arrived, we weren't aware that we were doing anything wrong as it just stated you must have a NZ bank account, so we made arrangements to use a relatives account and used a relatives address (which was the address where we could be contacted after arrival) The problem we have now is that we have to provide a NZ phone number and it won't accept a mobile number, but we don't actually have a landline!

I don't have a land line either so I supplied (03) 0000000 and it's accepted...
I guess I got lucky because when I first set up my Trade Me account I was in Singapore and it didn't get suspended. No NZ address and phone numbers. I was actually able to use it to contact some potential landlords and flatmates with it and only updated my details a few months later with my NZ address and phone number when I went on Trade Me, wanting to buy something.

Hi,
We registered with trademe from the uk a couple of months ago and they did contact us to say we couldn't do this as we were not in NZ. We emailed them back to explain we were emigrating and needed to be able to contact people to try and arrange accomodation. They emailed us back saying that was ok we could now view details/contact numbers and get in touch with people but we would not be able to buy or sell.
My husband has arranged his accomodation this way with no problems. :)

you could use an nz openproxy to register although i wouldnt condone such behaviour ;)

I signed up from the US about 4 years ago and had no problems. But I believe Trademe has become more strict and sophisticated since then. I remember reading back in '07 or '08 about how Trademe was plauged by scammers from Nigeria, Russia and some other countries, a lot of kiwis were "winning" auctions and sending payment, only to find out they were not going to get what they paid for. In response Trademe started banning anyone with foreign IP address, and also began verifying members address and Tel#. In general, kiwis are a trusting sort, you'll often read in the news here about kiwis getting ripped off by foreign scammers. There was a story in the Press yesterday about a woman from Christchurch that sent over $400,000 of her employers money to a Nigerian scammer, expecting 14 or 20 million in return.

My advice is don't help anyone contact a Trademe member unless your certain you know who they are. A convincing story and a legit looking email address is not always what it seems. The last thing you want is to end up associated with some scam.

You could be right - my Trade Me account was from '07 and never had a problem with it, but recently a friend in Singapore tried to create an account and it was promptly suspended.
