I thought that intuitively but I found that diesel was a (significant) savings in the models that I tried. I even made a spread sheet at one point:laugh

Having spoken to several diesel owners, they felt that it was less expensive as well.

I do mean with a Corolla or something--NOT a 4x4. A 4x4 would alter the equation considerably.

We are planning on getting a diesel soon.

Due to the age of our vehicle we are going to bring our 20 month old VW touran diesel with us. I knew that there was a levy but am finding it hard to calculate what we will have to pay. The RFL is not too bad in the UK as it is green as deisels go but I am not sure which vehicle type it will fall into. Over here we average 18k per year...of course, don't know what our mileage will be over there as don't know how much travelling etc. we are likely to be doing.

PLease could someone give me an indication of fuel costs (both petrol & deisel)and which vehicle cat it falls into so I can do some sums please. Since living in the HIghlands we have driven diesels due to the distances we have covered as fuel consumption was about 25% less and the engines have a longer life! (Yep we tend to run our cars into the ground!!!)

We have a Landrover Discovery TD5 series 2 - according to DH's calculations it is working out cheaper on diesel with the RUC than if it was petrol.

Diesel is currently around $1.07 } Both of which can be less with vouchers
Petrol is currently around $1.60+ }

We buy RUC in 5,000km, which is convert to miles as we don't have a km read out. Neither of us can remember how much it cost, but seem to think it was in the $180 region.

I was told it was more expensive to run small diesel cars than the big 4x4 SUVs and trucks. I think there's a point where no matter how little diesel you consume over the year, the land transit rego tax + distance you pre-pay kills any of the savings.

I also think a lot has to do with the application. If you're not driving huge distances and tend to carry a huge work load - ie. tradesman, the large diesel ute will definitely have a lower operating cost.

But then one must mention the extra cost for choosing a diesel powered vehicle. Much like the savings in fuel use to choose Hybrid petro cars.

Hey Mamee... I don't want to put a spanner in the works, but have you looked in to maintenance costs of VW's in NZ? I'd always owned VW's before moving here, but when I looked at bringing one over I found that the cost of VW maintenance and spares didn't make financial sense versus what was available here. I found it made more sense to sell the cars and then replace them here with Japanese models.
