New Zealand hit by third big quake in two days
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - The east coast of New Zealand's North Island was shaken by a magnitude 4.7 earthquake early Wednesday, the third big temblor to hit the country in two days, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported.
The quake struck at 3:51 a.m. (1551 GMT Tuesday) and was centered 100 kilometers (60 miles) off the coast at a depth of 11 kilometers (7 miles), the institute said on its web site.
The temblor was likely to have been felt in Gisborne and its surrounding area, the institute said.
Quakes packing magnitudes of 6 and 5.7 on Tuesday rocked the remote west coast region of South Island, tossing items from shelves in homes and shops. Nobody was injured in the two strong quakes, which rocked houses.
New Zealand sits above an area of the earth's crust where two tectonic plates are colliding and records more than 14,000 earthquakes a year - but only about 150 are felt by residents.
Gisborne is located 538 kilometers (336 miles) northeast of the capital, Wellington. - AP
