Hi all

We have been out of the forum for a few months trying to regroup!

Unfortunately we only get 65 points for skilled migrant category even though I had a City & Guilds in a type of Aeronautical Engineering that should have given me 50 extra points but, as the qualification is not listed on the Quality Assured Qualifications it is worthless!

We are now looking to buy a business and try getting in under the long term business, work to residence and entrepeneur category.

I will be HNC qualified in professional Cookery in June 05 and hope to use this someway in starting or buying into a Cafe or Bistro.

If anyone has any good info regarding these categories or business types then we would appreciate any help

thanks (we are not giving up!)

Sorry to hear your qual's weren't recocognised, but, hey ho. There's more than one way to skin a cat. :eek

I honestly can't help with the business type visas, Timbo had a bit of a rough ride with some immigration consultants on this matter, I'm sure he should have some good knowledge/info' on the subject :nice1. Try and PM him !

Good luck with the Bistro/Cafe.
Where do do plan to settle ? We could be a future customer. ;)

Good Luck

John

Thanx Bubbles

We are looking to go to Auckland as we have some family there in Titirangi.

I know property is more expensive but perhaps the possible customer base should be better.

p.s. when you said your qualification was not on the list of QA, did you actually have it checked by them?

Bruce and Gill. Unless you have hands on experience of the type of business you are considering, NZIS are not very likely to give you a second glance. Ask Jamie Smith for his advice.

The NZIS has good info on their site about requirements for establishing a business in NZ: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/invest/startingabusiness/canistartabusinessinnz/

On the subject of starting a business. If a couple (us) go to New Zealand on a PR Visa based on the hubbys job offer-quals etc... What would happen if the wife (me) wanted to set up a small business about 6/12 months later?

Would there be any specific restrictions? I know hubby has to stay in his job for a min 3 months, but this business venture wouldnt affect his job, its just something I want to look into for myself.

Also, my hubby was a sole trader in the UK and got alot of assistance when he was setting up in business. He got grants for equipment and low-cost business loan for a vehicle and lots of free advice.

What sort of help (if any) is available to new/small businesses in NZ?

Thanks

Joanne

If you have a work visa the you can set up a business, I do know that there is business help available from one of the canterbury councils organisations if you were in Chch so can only assume that other areas have the same set up. As for low cost loans, I havent a clue.

Thanks for that Veronica - we will be in Chch. I will have a look on the
council website.

be careful guys.

Usually the spouse gets an open permit and can work anywhere or for themselves. Often the PA has restrictions to only work where sponsored and there can be specific restrictions against self employment, much the same way as LTBV precludes the PA working for another business than their own so check your status carefully before spending the dough.
