Can anyone adise where I can get a nice THIN crust pizza from suppermarket, like the ones you get in Sainsburys or Tesco in the UK.

The ones here all seem to be deep crust, and ahve far too much cheese on them for my tastes

Hi,

Have you tried making your own? Much fresher and healthy, if the word healthy can be used in describing a pizza!

I use Delia's dough reciepe:

No probs love :P

As always with Delia's recipies, they take a bit of tweaking to get them just right. I guess the same would be said about any reciepe, more of a guide than an actual step by step instruction.

Yeah....make yer own pizza. Easy as..

And I've been amazed by this product

http://img.ediy.co.nz/32103.jpg

It has flour improvers & stuff mixed in with the dried yeast & it ROCKS!

Make a big batch of dough & freeze it in portions (or roll it and freeze it as pizza base)...you'll never buy frozen pizzas again!

To be quite honest I used to make my own pizza at home but no airing cupboard to keep the dough warm here & all the Pizza companies offer silly deals on pizzas - so we end up with 2 large pizzas for an absolute steal - I couldn't buy the ingredients that cheap for ones that size!

I know what you mean, but I've found that even though it costs more to shell out for all the flour, oil, topping stuff & mozzarella & so on, once you have it you can make loads of pizzas. Works out miles cheaper.

Hell Pizzas are pretty damn good though after a long day when you just want FOOD >>>NOW! :P

BIG PIZZA they are just down the block from us and they are good. At the moment they are doing 3 large pizzas for $20 , usually they are just $7.99 for a large pizza.

based on the recomendations here I've just finished eating a pizza from hell. Yumm.

Best I've seen here by a huge margin I'd say it was very like a dominos. Great website, very easy to put a order togther.

What got me was the customer service, as it was my first order, they needed to make a telephone call to confirm I was real. I made a typo in my number and transposed 2 digits. I'm not in the phone book, so they started making calls to numbers "like" the one I'd put down, and got me at the fifth attempt. Pizza was here 15 mins afterwards.

Chances of anyone in the uk making that kind of effort? Zero, they'd call the number i gave them, be told "nope" and that'd be the end of it.

A "hell" of a good effort. :nice1

Yeah, Hell is very good fer sure.

They have some bloody weird combos though on their menu...

Still not got my head around Chicken, Brie & Cranberry :no

But then again I'm a traditionalist where pizza is concerned...olives, capers, anchovies & garlic or just mozzarella & tomato. Or mebbe salami every now & again. I always have to order a Creator & the girl always asks me "Are you sure you don't want anything else on that?"

Cashews & Guacamole have no place on a pizza. Ever!

I have a rule with pizza, if it doesn't grow in Italy as a native plant, then it shouldn't be on a pizza.

Prime example of this is pineapple. It's just wrong

Moorf

Thank you, thank you - pineapple on pizza should be against the law :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh

Now, is there a Hells Pizza in Chch :?

miep
13th May 2005, 08:40 PM
Dave,

Try the pizza from the mediterranean warehouse in Newtown or in Days Bay. Not a pineapple in sight and no chicken and cranberry either!

I'm a bit of a puritan when it comes to pizza and rather not eat than have a Domino's or similar. Hell's arent bad but I really only order the "naked" one. All the others are drowning in greasy cheese and strange combinations of too many toppings. The local fave here in the pub is "4 meats" Yuck! :?

One of my other pet hates (I have many when it comes to food) is Subway. They advertise with the slogan that they bake their own bread. Well..... I wish they wouldn't bother! The fillings are pretty bad too but the bread! :wah

OK, 1 more: Can anybody explain the Kiwi (well I think its Kiwi) obsession of putting sweet stuff on savoury sandwiches????
It's really hard to avoid plum sauce, cranberry sauce and SWEET onion and tomato relish on otherwise nice sandwiches ??? Anybody have any idea?

:cheers Miep

I love them all!!!!

The first time I ever saw a group of kiwis eat fish and chips out of the paper (in one packet) made me laugh and wonder if they couldnt afford knives and forks.

I was told..."saves on washing up tho" as they all tucked in - pulling a pile of cips over to their area of paper in front of them and grabbing bits of fish etc.

The snob in me thought "get a LIFE"

We do it all the time now.......did it tonight......with a glass of wine!

Had to chuckle at this Carol. The first time I introduced my hubby to my family in Chch we had fish 'n chips for dinner. We piled our food onto plates then tucked in - with fingers. Mark sort of sat and looked at us with an odd look on his face then asked for a knife and fork. My auntie had a good laugh at poor Mark's expense. I'm not sure if he'll ever get the hang of it.
There is nothing nicer than fish n chips out of the paper on a beach at the end of a days outing (the chippie in Orewa used to be particularly nice - hope it still is!).

Debs (*currently drawling at the thought of fresh fish n chips NZ style*)

OK, Fush and chups straight out of the paper on the beach (or at home) I can do!
We are lucky that we even have a choice in this small village and both are pretty good. And incredibly cheap; Fush 1.80 and Chup 2.00 and I've never been able to finish the chups. OH doesn't eat fish so he usually gets chinese take away (same shop) which lasts him 2 days but he always manages to finish off my chips. ;)

Cheers..will look out for em.

Subway blows...big time.
Again - why bother with umpteen types of (spongy, plastic) bread & a zillion options for what to put in it??
Why not just do a few sarnies REALLY well & use quality ingredients?
And why do they all smell the same? Every Sub doorway pumps out this vaguely herby...synthetic smell.

Kiwi Sarnies: the sweet sauce thing I don't really get on sarnies. I'd go as far as something like Branston pickle with a cheese sanger, but usually I find they just sog the bread up.
Anyone else enjoyed the classic Kiwi sanger of Alfalfa sprouts, small slice of egg, shredded carrot, lettuce, tomato, salad cream (or what passes for mayo over here) and your meat/cheese of choice?

Noice!

Must be an English thing (Sal ??) ?? I grew up in the west of Scotland, and I've never eaten fish and chips with a knife and fork in my life. Frankly I'm uncomfortable with a plate.

The kiwis seem to have the right idea on this one.

The chicken, brie and cranberry sound really great; no different to having it in a sandwich. Not sure if the stuffing would go with the pizza though. And sweet sandwiches - yum yum.

And fish and chips out of the bag with tomato ketchup and mayo - great.

I think I'm really going to like it there . . . . . :nice1

Blitza pizza in Birkenhead (North Shore, Auckland) is pretty good for "upscale" pizza. I'm fairly addicted to the Vegetarian Gourmet pizza. I really like that kiwis put avocados on everything.

I can't recommend Birkenhead as a foodie destination, but we do like Blitza and for fish and chips, the Codfather on Hinemoa is good.

More than putting sweet stuff on savory things, I'm having a harder time getting used to savory things that should be sweet. Still not crazy about the bacon/sausage and cheese muffins.

Cafes usually have "sweet muffins" and "savory muffins". I've only tried the sausage and cheese so far. It sounded intriguing but was really heavy. I've seen bacon and cheese, spinach and cheese, sundried tomato, etc. I might have to try another kind (or a different cafe) because people here do seem to like them.
