Rangitoto Island that is. I have found Rangitoto, but it is land locked from what I can make out.
My reasons for asking will be made clear soon.

Strange.
What map are you looking at? A fictional one dated 600 years ago?
You've got me confused.

There is a Rangitoto Island. I went to a wedding recently in Auckland and the park where the ceremony was held had a view of the Island. The park is called Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, if that helps.

Thanks Gretchen, I have found it now. It is just off of Takapuna, in the Huraki gulf.
Sorry Glenda, I am ( was) a little confused myself. The only ref. I could find in the map index was for a place called Rangitoto in Waikato region, nr Waitomo caves. This place is inland and so does not fit with what I was looking for.
All will become clear.

Ok. Today, whilst clearing out the spare room to redecorate, Sarah came accross a watercolour that we had forgotten about. I bought it at a scout jumble sale about ten years ago, simply cos I liked it.
It hung in the living room till our African grey parrot decided to eat the frame.
Anyway. On removing the damaged frame, I checked for a signature. Absolutely gobsmacked to see the words " Rangitoto IS. NI NZ" along with the artists name.
We had never even thought about emigrating when I bought it.

There is a book (and a tv series) in NZ which is about these horrible things that live under the island - anyone remember what is it??? The have people names but arent people.
Some kids work it out.
(fictional story Timbo in case you are getting concerned!)

Well it must be a good likeness, as someone in NZ just identified it from the picture, and did so within 3 minutes of me asking.

Timbo .... when you get to Auckland .... look out to sea .... you'll see Rangitoto. It's an extinct volcano. Hubby tells me what when he was in the NZ Navy (staioned in Devonport) they went across to the island and had a picnic there one day.
But there again .... he tells me all kinds of stories like this, I then re-tell them only to turn around and find him laughing like a Cadbury's Smash alien because (once again) I've fallen for some cock & bull tale.
In fact .... to be on the safe side .... disregard everything I've just written.

I have a wonderful view of Rangitoto from my office window - so much nicer than the dirty alley I used to look onto in Marylebone...
It is very easy to tell that your picture is Rangitoto - it is an almost perfect triangular volcano in the Hauraki Gulf.
Diny - You can take day trips over to the island and walk up to the cone. Great views back across the city and further out into the gulf. I think Fullers run the boat out to there, but not too sure on this.

Ok, that did work,
Timbo, yes, pic is of Rangitoto Island. You were meant to be here eh.
You will have to go and visit. I was a bit disapointed when I went there, I don't really know what I was expecting.
That Photo was taken in January.
