Let's just say, hypothetically, that someone was arrested for DUI in the past 5 years and has submitted an EOI. Does anyone know if this is a reason to be denied/not selected? Does anyone know if that person would have a chance to explain to NZIS, i.e., that drinking is no longer a problem?

Also, should we be reporting that, yes, we have "broken any law in any country" if the only offence was a parking ticket? I hate to be lumped into the same bucket as murderers and thieves because I parked on the wrong side of the street!

Plus it seems redundant (and an overinflation of the number of positive responses in the character section) if I have to say yes to the "any law in any country" question and the question about traffic offences.

Thanks.
Gretchen.

Hi - not sure what DUI is....!

We both had points on our driving licences for speeding (Rob - twice)
and going through an amber light (me)
As they were "crimes" we declared them on the forms - no problems...

I will probably get told off for telling you lot this ;) , but hubby got done for being drunk and disorderly :cheers a few years back, and they let him in without even questioning it. (it was over 10 years ago though)

I think it all depens on who your case officer is, what type of visa you are applying for etc. but in all fairness I can;t think it would be a big showstopper.

BTW I should say this but many kiwi's drink & drive (my Humour) you may even get extra points for it

Thanks, Jo B. It's hard to say if the drinking-and-driving issue in NZ will get us in or keep us out!!

All we can do is try . . .

Thanks for that Sal, bringing up my criminal past for everyone. I was fitted up. :bobby

Don't want to be a downer, but I think you may have a problem here. The operations manual says, people not granted visas for character reasons include.

convicted at any point in the last 5 years of an offence involving driving with excess alcohol in the blood or failed a breath test.

If it's over 5 years then, no worries

You can find out by looking at page 48 of the operations manual. Section A5.25 H

I'd recomend anyone going through the immigration process to look at this link, this is the document your case officer uses to decide if you get in.

I read through the manual in your link (thanks!) and actually it states that we could be granted a visa if given a character waiver.

I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Thanks again for the manual - it's very helpful.
