Can anyone tell me what the best way to go about getting insurance is. We will be coming out in June and can get travel insurance for 30days, but this is on the condition that you return back to the UK, obviously we are not so thats a bit worrying. I will be searching for a job and taking interviews as soon as I get there so I should get a visa within the first month. Once you have a visa are you entitled to any medical cover like the NHS ? Has anyone got a long term insurance that didnt cost £900, thats the quote I have been getting for 6 months !!
Thanks all
Mark

Mark. As I understand it, the UK has a recipricol (sp) agreement with Nz as far as day to day medical treatment is concerned. You should therefore be able to get sorted for the duration of a visistor visa.
It would obviously still make sense to have some insurance for other events. Have you checked out the backpackers specialists? They must do longer term cover surely.

Yes I have checked that out also, there is an agreement that covers everyone for accident or injury - all done by the ACC. The only worry is they dont cover you if you get ill, how do you get on once you have a visa, are you covered somehow ?

you can get cover for upto 90 days away. Check out with your insurance company or better still check out the internet for a good deal.

But dont you have to say you are coming back ? What would happen if you did fall ill and didn't come back ? Also they want about £300 for 90 days, sounds a lot !!
Cheers

Mark,
As Timbo said, there is a recipricol agreement, so all you need is cover for the flight period - ie a oneway travel policy. ACC covers you for emergencies and as for all of us here, if you are sick, you stroll into a surgery - get seen and pay your $50 !
The only thing you would gain with a full policy is repatriation as far as I can tell?

Thanks people for the input, I think we will probably just go for 30 days insurance and hope we can sort things out when there.
MNL was the cheapest, thanks we may use them.

Mark. For what it is worth, the above company were recommended to me by a friend who travels frequently. She has to have regular treatment for a serious kidney problem, and tells me that this is the only firm she has found who will sell her decent cover, at a reasonable price.
