Hello, I'm trying to get a grasp on how the cluster points work on the EOI.

As far as I can tell, clusters are several companies pooling their resources to some degree, instead of competeing. Do you need to have a job offer from one of these companies in order to claim points? If so, then why is there a question for cluster points under qualifications as well?

I'm hoping that you can claim points for experience that could lead to you getting a job at one of those companies.

Or maybe I am misunderstanding the definition of clusters. Is it only specific companies that participate, or is it certain industries in general?

My situation:
My husband is a programmer, for mobile phones games. I see that mobile phone applications are in a cluster under "creative" in Wellington.

He can claim points for the priority occupations list (I believe), since programmers are on there now. I think "creative" is also a future growth area. Since he has experience for something that could get him a job in a Wellington cluster, can he claim any points for that?

It sure would be nice if he could get 3 for 3!
Thanks, hoping someone else has gone over this with NZIS.

Hi Juniper,

As far as I can tell you can only claim the cluster points if you have a job offer with a company belonging to a cluster.

Hope that helps.

thanks, hopefully it won't matter anyway :-) anyway we haven't even decided to submit yet, so i guess there's time to mull it all over. i'm just so curious, it's fun to see how many points you get and think, "oo, maybe maybe!"
