We're planning on getting a very short-term rental property (6months-ish) once we land in NZ in July, and for ease, we plan to rent fully furnished and then move our own stuff into our own house once we've bought somewhere.
I can't decide whether to leave our stuff in storage in the UK where it is now, or ship it over now and put it onto storage in NZ once it arrives.
[We're currently paying about 40 GBP p/wk in the UK for just over a 20ft containers worth of stuff]
Any helpful suggestions / experiences welcomed

If you're sure that you're going to stay I would have thought that there were benefits to getting the stuff over here and available for delivery exactly when you need it.
If you have a 6 month rental and find the ideal property to buy sooner you may be able to get out of the rental early and move into your own home as long as your container is already here.
Predicting when something will arrive is not an exact science, so by leaving things in the UK and trying to time it right you could end up with it either arriving too soon (and needing to store in NZ as well as UK which might incur some one-off costs) or arriving too late (and having to do the old "orange boxes and tea chests" trick for a dining room suite for a few weeks).

The other thing to take into consideration is that there isn't always a lot of furnished rental about. If it was me I'd store it here.

I think this is the key to how you deal with the issue. Have you been here before, are you a returning Kiwi, are you certain NZ is for you and you will stay etc / have jobs ??
I'd hate to have shipped over all our gear just to have to ship it back again if we didn't like it here or couldn't make it work.
Just my 2penneth worth!

Definitely staying.
This is our one & only, all or nothing one way trip, absolutely & categorically...probably !
Seriously, we couldn't afford to come back if we wanted to. We've got permanent residency and jobs to go to etc. so no way are we heading back to the UK.
Even if you payed me...

Does anyone have a ball park figure for monthly storage in NZ, for, say, 20 footer?

Hi Timbo,
Robinsons quoted us this month , a one off handling charge of £140, then a monthly storage charge of £118 . They use NZVanlines.
Hope this helps,
Anne.

Thanks Anne. That sure sounds better than our local storage unit. From memory, they quoted circa £265 pm for 100sq ft. (plus vodka)

I believe you are allowed only one duty free delivery of personal goods moving nto the cuntry...per visa (not per person) That is one per household. You get another if you have a family member die (parents only) and presumably are moving inherited items.
read this before we arrived here.
Take it all now.
