Oh boy, after 9 months of living on bare essentials we are now unpacking our boxes.
It's a very weird experience. Apart from the emotional impact of getting my pictures and photos, things have changed so much in our lives that we are looking at our belongings in a very different light.
I have enough crockery to re-stock John Lewis and could probably invite half of Canterbury round for a 5 course dinner and STILL have spare bowls for dips :? , I stood and stared at our 6 best wine glasses and realised that in total they cost the equivalent of just under NS$1000 :eek and after buying what we thought was an adequate sized double bookcase on Saturday, we have 3 more boxes (that we actually know of at this point) of books to unpack  .
We have over 30 mugs (err, will someone PLEASE come round for coffee), several suitcases of clothes and more potato mashers and pizza cutters than your average cafe would require.
And we thought we'd "rationalised" our belongings before we left :? I threw away / gave away so much stuff that it's hard to believe just what we must have amassed (and, obviously, taken for granted!).
And, do I really really need that map of the Kennet and Avon canal? Probably not, but even now it's useless to us here, I still can't bear to throw it? :uhoh (my excuse, we once had a houseboat holiday and it's a "momento" I have an excuse for EVERY scrap of paper I have bought with me! (But Diny, sorry, I just can't find an excuse for FLUFF!! :no )
And I think I'll open a "novelty oven glove" shop - have enough stock to last several months (thanks mum! :laugh :laugh )....
:? :no :?
Oh, and after having NO MAF inspection (perhaps because we didn't remember having any wooden stuff etc and didn't declare anything) we unpacked a bag of very dirty tools, several wooden bowls and lots of wooden artifacts!! :laugh

(Not sure about the map though)

I'm sure a lot of kiwis would find a way of adapting the map for use in the McKenzie Country... :laugh

Ooooh I could do with a pizza cutter and a potato masher me!!!!!
You could sell it all on trade me!
Nice to have it all though right? (Please say it is - I have about 150 untouched boxes to unpack when we move house in 2 weeks...and our rental seems full!)
Sarah.

Interesting posting Moorf, I have a sneaky feeling we'll be thinking along the same lines when our shipment arrives.
However, it'll be nice to have familiar things around us.
We now have nothing on show in this house to give any clues that we live here. No pictures, ornaments, lampshades, curtains, rugs etc. It's totally bare with just the few essentials in the cupboards to see us through until we leave.
This house use to be our 'castle' .... a warm, friendly place - full of familiar comforts. It's now just an 99% empty shell that echos and feels strangely austere. It's helped to convince me (since writing my 'do we need all this stuff' thread) that actually the answer is 'no' I don't need it, but 'yes' I do want it.
As for several tattie mashers and a bag of tumble dryer fluff ...... well the jury is still out on that one.

Moorf, you could send hubby a pizza cutter thats all hes eating these days since someone pointed him in the direction of hells pizza website, he will be going on a diet in 12 days time!! :laugh :bobby (food police arrive!!, ie ME!)
Diny, as for your obsession with fluff, I have thought of a good use, as houses are meant to be so cold, you could use it for insulation? :nice1
I still cannot believe how much stuff we have, even after several trips to the tip and a severe declutter when we moved house 2 years ago.
But as the others have said, if it makes you feel good and there's room in the container, so what??

Moorf - your post really made me laugh.... why? - because when we unpacked I could not believe we had about 100 glasses (at least) - why??? & every concieveable kitchen gadget on the market (at least once) We have quite a large kitchen here in the rental property but I really can't move to a house with any smaller a kitchen as I'd have to commandeer a bedroom as a kitchen storage cupboard!! :laugh
Good luck with selling your surpluses on Trademe! :nice1

The only thing I didn't bring, and wish I had, was the breadmaker!!! I'd happily trade my pizza cutter for a breadmaker? Anyone?!!
We should start up our own forum version of Trademe - we could call it SwapShop (ok, I know, I watched it Saturday mornings too :laugh )
I'll start - I'll swap one ... errr no, I might need that... ok, how about swapping 2 .. no, I might break one and need a replacement in 2 or 3 decades time.. err .. hmm this isn't going to work

Or should I ask WHY are you selling it? :uhoh You have 2? Or upgrading? Or it makes loaves the size of mars bars?
Tanya

NO nothing like that - loaf sizes are the usual good size. Richard didn't like the bread in England but loved the multigrain loaves I baked for him. Here he has discovered a make of bread he likes so that is why it's going to go.

I bought one cause I thought I liked it, but the rest of the family didnt like it, so I was eating all that bread. Mine makes two smaller loaves at the same time, but you can buy a bigger mold to bake one big loaf.
Kinda liked that idea, but havent bought the bigger mold yet, because I dont eat that much bread! Maybe I need to get better recipies, just a beginning baker here. But also, maybe when we get over there we might need to bake our own bread, grow our own veggies, and who knows what else? ;) :laugh
