Ok, so I'm a bit of an anorak, but am I able to take my collection of model railway equipment to NZ?

Yes, but you can't bring your anorak (or your flask of weak lemony drink and fluff covered Spangle from your anorak pocket ) :laugh

There are some hobbies in the UK which are typically male which some people feel are a little strange for a grown man. Having a model railway collection, model aircraft, model boats/cars (seen as playing with toys), collecting aircraft registration numbers - known as aircraft spotting, or similar with trains or boats are all often called anorak activities, so called because typically they would be outdoors writing down numbers in books wearing an anorak (a type of coat).

Its extended to people who learn many many facts about something, like people who know the names of the players in the 194x world cup for example. Facts which are unimportant to all but the collector

Well thats what I think an anorak is, maybe someone has a much better idea!

cheers

So, can anyone tell this confuzzled dutch girl what that expression means?
Being an "anorak"?

(and Yes, I have wondered for some time now)

At the risk of sounding like one, I believe it comes from that lovely bunch of people we know as 'train-spotters' who certainly used to (assume it's still the case) stand at the end of certain station platforms making notes on the engine-number on each train that came into the station.

These guys (and probably occasionally girls) all used to wear the same style anoraks - blue, with a hood with a grey fluffy rim. Instead of being called geeks or nerds they were named after their rather unattractive attire.

Hope this helps you sleep tonight !

Being a co owner of an aviation museum I get to see loads of plane spotters, a stranger crowd you couldnt meet they travel miles pay their entrance fee dash through the museum only stopping to write down aircraft registration numbers in their little tatty books before dashing out to their cars to drive miles to the next museum :( :(
Regarding Hobbies in NZ I am taking a good supply of radio-control planes as I feel the best way to integrate into local life is to join in with things i have already emailed and regularly chat to a guy at the flying club near where we are going , I have also got in touch with the Auckland Harley owners club chairman .We feel the sooner you get into local life the sooner the longing for the old life we left behind will fade :nice1

any web anoraks tell me why my answer to Hanna's question now appears as if it was entered before she asked it. Guess its to do with the time zones?

I brought all my toys. inc model railway stuff.

Don't get any ideas about being a Trainspotter here though it's about a week long hobby - after a week trainspotting you'll have seen all the trains in NZ.

Oh go on i will. Italy: 38 and Brazil: 50
