Diny, & others

I like your bike Diny, and it made me wonder what the roads are like for bikers in NZ. Previously from biking mags, I heard they are great, then I read about the appaling driving in NZ.

Just wonder if any posters have any comments?

cheers

can't comment on Motorbikes but can comment on driving, appalling is a word that springs to mind. Can't get over that a people that are so friendly are so unfriendly when they get behind the wheel of a car.

The roads in NZ were conceived, designed and engineered specifically for bikers, by bikers.
Must have been! :nice1
The main state highways are exceptionally well maintained, wide, and the corners are cambered perfectly. I have never yet met a biker who has had anything negative to say about the roads there.
As for the driving, well, you're going to get bad driving everywhere.

...and you've just hit on another one of my wants, a BMW 1150C is high on the list an' all!

BMW ????

No way - It's a Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail for me !!!

I agree with my dear PB - when God made NZ he made the roads with bikers in mind.

Diny, did you come to the 100th years anniversary in Milwaukee, USA? because my cousin told me that he spoke with people from New Zealand...

No - didn't make the 100th birthday bash but I heard it was very good. By the way - I'm still in UK (hubby a Kiwi) - should be in NZ at Christmas time.

I am not a biker, but I have to say I was VERY impressed with the Nz roads that we encountered. All well maintained and nice and wide mostly. One little thing made me chuckle though. Your driving along at a steady 90 kph on a lovely smooth, wide road (wide enought to U turn in without trouble) and all of a sudden you come accross a bridge that narrows down to single lane and someone has to give way. Why dont they build the bridges the same width as the road???
It has been mentioned on here before, but it is probably more important to bikers than those on 4 wheels. The scenery is just mind blowing in places, and can be a major distraction. I nearly came a cropper more than once when rounding a bend to be greeted by a sight straight out of the glossy brochure.
IMHO, Kiwi drivers are deranged.

We're thinking of (just fiddling with the idea at this stage) organising an "End to End" motorcycle tour, from the North Cape to Bluff.
Not a speedy gumball rally, but a 2 or 3 week chilled cruise.

Guess you'd be interested in that?

I was wondering how long it would be before you mentiond that?

We've been thinking about it for a few months now - ever since PB and 2 mates did John O'Groats to Lands End in 20 hours 20 mins on Harley-Davidsons ...... raising a heap of dosh for the county air ambulance. If you ever find yourself in the visitor centre at Lands End have a look in the hall of fame ...... his pic is there !!!!!!!

We have a couple of biker mates in UK who are planning to join us on the 'end to end' ride. Only in very early stage of 'wouldn't it be good if we .....' but hey, from tiny acorns mighty oaks do grow.

Diny & all other bikers,

My DH has a GPZ 550 at the garage at his mum's which has been there since we moved house for............................................... .. .................................................. .....wait for it................................................ . .................................................. ..........................................8 YEARS :wah

trouble is I always use to fall asleep on the back. Is this a common problem with pillion passenger or have I just got narcolepsy :?

I don't know if he will bring to NZ but it will probably be cheaper to buy a new one oer than ship that one.

Cheers

I always fell asleep on the back of PB's bike. He had a Harley-Davidson Roadking Classic and the pillion seat was abit like a sofa.

I would often be woken by a quick jolt from his elbow or some sudden (unnecessary) braking.

I am told that bikes are cheaper in NZ than in the UK but don't have any actual experience of this to draw upon.

hi,
must agree the roads are brilliant for two wheels, but if you fancy a change from your hogs when you get to queenstown, there is a guy who hires out yam xt500's and guides an offroad circuit round the middle of the south island.
it was the biggest buzz i've ever had on two wheels. trips can be from 2 hours upto a full week and i would recommend it to anyone.
cheers
