After constant mulling over our position we have opted to attack and just do it. That is, we have decided to pack up and ship out mid-end July regardless of house sale.

After 3 months on the market without huge amounts of interest we are getting deeper and deeper into this limbo of waiting and with the Visa attached to Mrs Xmas's job in Auckland that is causing stresses too.

My company is letting me go at the end of June and Mrs xmas is happy to work until mid July, hopefully we can arrange for removals, flights and keep job people happy in the interim. While I look for work with an immediate(ish) start in Auckland in August.

At least now we feel like we are in control of the situation again, rather than being at the beck and call of house buyers. It will be a stretch financially, but worth it to move our dream forward rather than hang around getting more down and potentially closer to losing it.

So, back to a stacked credit card and if the timing is right some savings that should cover the mortgage for a few more months, and a buyer might just turn up in the interim.

We are firm believers in fate and there will always be a way to get by if you are positive enough, lets face it, we are talking about the land of opportunity...

I am convinced it's that old bus-stop phenomenon, as soon as we walk away 3 of them will turn up!

Best regards to all, and I would interested to hear of any forumites that have done/considered the same.

I wish you all the best Rich. Like you say, as soon as you get on the plane, a cash buyer will probably offer up the full asking price.
You only get the one life, go for it. :cheers

Rich & Soph,

Have you considered a morgatge holiday? A friend of mine mentioned it to us. If you ring your mort.co. up they may let you. I think it is maximum of 6 months but it may help.

Good for you :clap We left home in January (still trying to sell the house - have had 3 offers since we went - fell through once but fingers crossed).

OK so house situation not so good but if I could go back 6 months would I come back & be sat at home waiting for the house to sell or would I come to NZ & pay a NZ rent & UK mortgage but have the most fabbo lifestyle & have experienced so much great change in my life? I'd go for the latter without a second thought every time!!!! :nice1

Captain,

Best of luck to! Your're braver than us that's for sure! We were in exactly the same situation as you with job lined up in Auckland to start 1st August, and our flights booked for 8th July. We had been trying to sell our house, went down the shall we try and rent it out route but that didn't look any more promising. Got so stressed out about the house selling thing and whether we would make it financially in Auckland. We decided last week that we just couldn't cope with the stress and we are now staying in UK and I can tell you it's pretty hard coming back down to earth again. Sometimes you just gotta go for it. I wish you all the best.

Thanks for all the support gang :cheers , just waiting for the go ahead from the job people.

Then we can crack on with all the stuff that we haven't been able to for 3 months.

There will always be the 'are we doing the right thing' question, but you only get one chance at life. so here goes.. :exit :exit

Good on ya,
we're in Limbo too, Rimbo & Suzy Rimbo in Limbo eh?
Suzy awaiting house to sell before coming over here to start bending my ear on a daily basis again ;)
so we might just end up saying "ahhh, **d it" and get them out here. Financially we will be very poor, I certanly can't pay a UK mortgate on my meager salary, then there is living and rent here too, so in fact it will cost us a good amount of our savings, but, it will be the right thing to do for us i think.

Quick follow up.

Work is coming to a close, and we have shippers coming in on the 18th of July.
Flights are booked for 26th July and Motel in AKL from 29th.

And, not wanting to curse anything, there are a couple of hopefuls in the house arena. Nothing solid, but they are out there circling like the sharks in Open Water.

Feet not on the floor and we don't have time to organise our own party, but it will all come together.

Looking forward to being cashless in Auckland, yippee!

We were in the same boat until a few weeks ago ,you get to the point where you cannot put life on hold any longer, luckily as we discussed the move a buyer turned up, but if they pull out we will still go anyway, like you said stack up the credit cards :nice1

Not wanting to get our hopes up, but on Saturday we accepted an 'asking price' offer on our house...OH MY GOD! :eek

We are totally gobsmacked, and have gone from 'will somebody buy our house' to 'hope everything is all right' modes.

Now we can get on with planning the flights with half a brain worrying about it rather than a whole brain.

Just looking forward to seeing that SOLD sign outside before we go.

Time for some dancing fruit.....

Hi Captain Xmas

Really pleased for you - we were/are in the same position (as you were in first post!!) - our house has been on the market since September last year - not a sniff and it's in a very desirable blah blah village etc etc, no really, it's quite nice.... We decided to leave it empty as felt that if we rented it out it might make it harder to sell and even though we have still not sold it (and have dropped the price by £20k :eek ) we are happy with our decision and in the long run, feel that we did the best thing at the time, with the info. we had etc. Really hoping that it will sell before the winter and if not we may have to rethink on the rental front but we tried to take the view that it's all part of the big picture and what you lose there you might make up here etc. and if not, so what - we're not here to make anything anyway, we wanted a different lifestyle!!!!!

Hope it all goes through smoothly for you :nice1

Quick update:

Packed up and said goodbye to our house a week ago (was it really?)

We have spent a nice week in Devon with rellies, but are ready for the off now.
Looking forward to an early start and very long drive tomorrow up and across 2 of the least favourite summer motorways in the UK.

lots of goodbyes so far, but nothing too wrenching. (we have been able to stay with our cats for the last few days aaaahhh). The airport is going to be the big test now.

seperately we have had a few flashes of nerves, but only minor quibbles and really just need to get on and be doing something positive now. Sophie starts work next Monday and I need to get on the job trail as soon as poss - have lost heart with Seek and agency based adverts. (One thing is for sure Agencies are the same the world over!)

House is still trickling on and is now in the hands on the Solicitors, until it is sold it doesn't feel like we have given anything up I guess.

So a bit of a drivel update, but I'm sure we wil lmake more sense in a few days.

Thanks to everybody for keeping the community going and all the knowledge shared, good luck everybody. :raebanana :raebanana

Bouncing in the net...

Just to prove it can be done:

It seems a lifetime ago that we gave up on waiting and grabbed our move out here by the balls, it was'nt a lifetime it was a rainy lunchtime in May as I sat on a bench eating my lunch.

Since then as you know we took a chance and planned the move regardless and the best news is that our house sale completed on Tuesday ( :raebanana :raebanana ) - even though the purchasers wanted to delay until Nov 1st. And a nerve racking 24hrs after the Solicitors sent our cash to the wrong account!

Followed quickly by me securing a job with a nice firm in Mt Wellington after 6 weeks of interviews - I am ready to do something now.

And we decided to begin negotiations on a house here in Auckland before we got any finance from the UK too, hey, you've gotta do it sometimes. It's a cosy 3 bed bungalow that has got room to be expanded and is in a nice and quiet suburb near Titirangi, a place that will suit our needs for thr next couple of years and hopefully stay on board as an investment in the future.

So I think my message is this:

Sometimes, if you are ready to go and do it - you really have to, before somebody else does. We never would have taken those risks usually, but in this case everything has worked out perfectly (or near as). You can be a slave to your bills, but with a bit of trimming and planning you can sidestep them for a little while and fate will take over.

If you don't leap, you'll never land in the net

Great news. We did much the same thing - left before the house had completed, negotiated on a house before our UK house funds came through. All very nail biting but like you say - sometimes you just have to make that leap.

Good luck with everything.
