How about degrees in NZ?

Hey, I got a question for all you Kiwi’s!

I’m wondering about the difference that is being made in companies in NZ between employees with and employees without degrees.

How much emphasis is being put on a college, university, bachelor or masters degree? I mean if you don’t have a degree do they refuse to pay you more money or refuse you for a job? Or can you work your way up just based on your CV without having diplomas or degrees to show that you can do what you say can?

Hope to hear….

Only been here a month, so not got a huge amount of background, but I was told that my company now only hires people with degrees for a job like mine (it's a techincal job). From what I can tell Kiwis really like this kind of thing.

I did the same type of job in the uk, and only around a third of people doing it in my company had degrees.

I think once you get into your 30's a degree is pointless, by this stage you can either do the job, or you can't. Experience will show this. A paper qualification gained a decade ago (in my case) is meaningless.

Yes I think it totally depends on the job that you are looking at, something more technical they may prefer that bit of paper, but my husband got his job without a degree. It will be interesting how far he can get (he has already had a promotion and raise) as in the UK he had hit the wall of 'no degree, no more promotion but hey you can do all the work anyway!'.

I think it just depends on the organisation and the ethos of that organisation.

Well, I always used to think the same thing. Once you've worked about 10 years you're on the same level as those who went and got a degree and have just been working for about 4 years (and are in huge debt). But here in the Netherlands they really really like degrees. They make me do all the work and pay me about EUR 300-400 less a month. :? than they would somebody with a degree. This (big multinational) is the fifth company in ten years I work with but they're all the same except for the American company I worked with one time... go figure  Anyway, I'm now studying for my bachelors degree but we're planning to move to NZ in a year and I'm not sure I'm able to finish in time so I was just wondering about the situation in NZ.

Thanks for the input :nice1
