Hi.
We've just been told that our 14 yr old needs fixed braces, top and bottom at a price of $6500 ( Gasp ! )
I was wondering whether prices were cheaper outside of Auckland and will be ringing around next week.
Has any one here has experience of orthodontists in NZ ?

My daughter is in the early stages of getting a brace (in UK), her first appointment was 14.02.05, then on 16.03.05 she had all the photo's & examinations done. Next one was 13.06.05 and we were advised of the work they want to do, then the Orthodentist sent the forms off to NHS for approval to pay for her treatement (which apparently costs £3,000!). Next appointment is 05.09.05! It may end up a bit close to leaving for NZ (Martyns job starts in October!). All Orthoddentists in our area in the SE England are very very busy and waiting lists are very long. So my advise is start treatement as early as possible!!

Hi
before left UK was told both my girls would need braces  have just booked their initial consultation over here at a cost of $90 apparantly this is usually each but as I have booked them both at the same time they are doing 2 for the price of 1 :clap don't think this will be the case all the way through unfortunately :( perhaps I should have booked their brother in as well just in case!
Anyway will keep updated on cost apparantly they offer several payment options which makes me think it will be expensive and presumably not paying is NOT one of the options :wah

Hi Clarabell,
Free free, how did you get it for free?
Your comment about free made me smile, in 12 months I had to pay £9000 in NI that’s around $23400 NZ (IR35 fun) and I still had to pay the dentist!
If it was a great service I wouldn’t mind so much.
I got an abcess had to see an emergency dentist (who I had to pay) then it took me over 3 months to register with a dentist to get treated with more than just antibiotics (who I also had to pay) so, as far as I can see it’s far from free, I’d gladly pay $4500 if I need treatment.

hi, my boys are 4 and 7, no one in my family has had braces, is this a frequent requirement for teenagers nowadays?
Can you get covered on medical insurance for something like this?

Have just come back from my daughters first appointment with an orthodontist in Christchurch. She has a cross bite(top teeth sit behind bottom teeth) he is going to deal with now and probably braces and extractions in a few years time(shes only 8 at the mo so she hasnt got all her permanent teeth)
He is going to give her an invisible brace to push the 2 top teeth forward so they sit over the bottom. Cost - $320 + GST which includes todays consultation and subsequent appointments to check its working correctly.
Best tell hubby now then:exit

Bob, depends whether you was getting any Benefits. I presume Clarabell may be getting some kind of benefit and is therefore qualified for NHS treatment.

Lisa - who are you going with ?? The Orthodontist we went to charges 35 for the initial consultation with about 40 for the x-rays. I would be interested to know what you get charges when you find out.

This is really frightening reading these prices. Our son has seen an orthodontist in the UK who has confirmed that he will need treatment over the next ?? years. Of course its all free in the UK and I can't see us being able to afford the NZ prices. Can it be covered in medical assurance. ( I am sure someone else asked the same question but couldn't see the answer)

Our 16 year old completed her orthodontic treatement in UK about a month before we came out, phew! and it was all free. My niece (also in Cardiff) started hers about a month after we came out and my sister has to PAY!! It's £thousands! Apparently they have changed the rules, so it's only free if there is a "medical" need now.
Our youngest, aged 9, (called "my little shark" by our UK dentist) has a very narrow jaw and thus her second teeth are coming up behind each other, hence the shark title. She will need big-time orthodontics, so as I am just about to start employment, I will see if it is covered by healthcare plans. Somehow, I doubt it!

Just to add to this, I have just been quoted $650 for a root canal, even though I have funny double roots (wouldnt you just know it!).
Some other prices I was quoted in case they are of interest, a filling $180, and an extraction again $180, not sure how much of this price is the consultation fee, if any...
He was a very nice man... and did his best to calm my jangling nerves, not sure how many lots of anaesthetic he put in!

Some more prices;
I had a check up, x-ray + scale and polish and was in there for a full hour - it cost $127, which I thought was a bargain.
A tooth extraction is $185 and a filling $165. This is at 'The Centre of Dental Excellence' in Tawa.

Well some of you may be aware of all the trouble I had before we came out, having two teeth out and a general to remove a cyst in the roof of my mouth. I also needed root canel but they need to let the rest of th stuff heal. Just got up the courage to go to the dentist here.
MY treatment plan estimate so far is
Initial consultation was $75
Root canal on one tooth $720
Teo trips to the hygienist at $85 each.
I am having a FREE (yipee) consultaion with the oral surgeon about having implants where the two teeth got taken out, but that will also come down to cost too - I've lived without them now for about 6 months, kind of get used to not being able to chew on one side!! We talked about a bridge but the gap is too big and would put too much strain on the other teeth, and also a plate, but i don't think I could handle that it would probably make me gag!!
So will let you know when I find out what the cost of implants is (we are talking teeth implants here folks by the way!!!!! :p )

Sadly I don't think this kind of work is covered by medical insurance. Through workI had the top medical cover provided by southern Cross , and it only covered $400 a year for dental / orthodontic work.

We arrived 8 months ago and my eldest daughter had a fixed brace on her top & bottom teeth. It has cost us $3000.00 to complete her treatment:eek: It's expensive to have straight teeth in NZ.
Most people I know pay anything between $5000-$7000 for full treatment. My son needs braces but he'll have to wait, we need to build a house first:laugh

I've had my braces on for about 5 years now. I had them on just after my 13th birthday and now I'm 18! Treatment doesnt seem to be going to well for me! I was told I would need about three appointments more before I can have my braces off but I would miss my thrid appointment as I would be in NZ!
Would it be best to have the brace off early and risk my teeth not being totally straight or having to face the huge fees of having straight teeth in NZ!

Similar thing with our neighbours who have just arrived from the UK. I mentioned my daughters Orthodontist to them - I think their daughter had only 2 or 3 more treatments to go. I'll find out the cost as they should have looked into it by now and let you know!

I just got an email from my sister saying her 14 year old's braces will cost £1,500 under the new rules in Wales!!
Our daughter has been seen by the school dental service and they agree she will need orthodontic treatement, but not for a few years yet as she's only 9.
Time to start saving :D

We are still living in the UK at present, and hoping to move to NZ soon. My youngest daughter is seven and will definitely need braces when she is older. Our dentist in the UK reckons it will cost about £3000+, as there aren't many nhs orthadontists in our area anymore. Maybe NZ prices aren't so bad, I guess it depends on each individual case.
