I've noticed that certain household linen items etc are referred to as "Manchester" - I've never heard this expression before - what's the background??

What you mean Farmers Manchester range that is on special offfer only on this queens birthday weekend? is that the one youre talking about?

Because I was wondering the same thing. Maybe it relates to the old trading routes with Manchester, Then wheres the Liverpool and Southampton ranges.

Well they seemed to be using "manchester" as a name for a particlar type of product, ie. crockery, electrical etc , not a brand :?

I found that highly amusing when I first got here Helen....going to the "Manchester" department.
Like you were going to be served by Sir Alex or something!!

From the Concise Oxford Dictionary:

Manchester Goods - cotton, textiles.

(see also Liverpool Goods - anything that has fallen off the back of a lorry (only kiddin' like, wack)).

Foolsgold

rest assured you werent the only one. I made the connection - and I seem to have the impression that "Manchester" is really Towels and Linen.

More likely I recall to be a product from those dark satanic Mills in places like Bury Burnley and Halifax

Being a Manchester lad meself, I'm going to suggest it's because M'cr used to be the epicentre of the cotton industry in the 19thC.
